WordPress URLs vs. Domain names: can they be different?

  Can I start a wordpress account with a URL that is different from a domain name I map it onto? For example, I own ChurchOfCat.com. If I start a ChurchofCats.wordpress.com (plural), would I be able to map it onto ChurchOfCat.com? Thanks.

  Custom Domains do not have to have any relation to the _______.wordpress.com URL that you choose. Icouldnotthinkofanythinginteresting.wordpress.com could have fredsmith.com as a custom domain.

  Does that make sense?
