WordPress used to be easy and intuitive
-
I favored WordPress 14 years ago. Starting a second blog is a frustration-unable to edit, customize, personalize, or really anything

Hi there, what’s the address of the site you need help with?
If you started a new WPcom site recently, your editor by default is the Block Editor. And it really is much easier to use than it looks. The default block is the Paragraph block so you can just start writing. When you hit Enter, the Editor will create a new Paragraph block. If you want to add images, start your next block with
/imageand that will bring up many of the image insertion options. As far as customizing, are you referring to your theme or your content?
If you mean your theme, most of the Block Styles themes do have fewer customization options than WPcom’s older themes, but the developers are working on bringing more options to them. Twenty-Twenty and Seedlet probably have the most customization options.
If you mean your content, please share with us your content creation process and we’ll see how we are able to help further.

As for “just start writing” or “add images,” what I wanted to do before “launching” was to design a simple, usable site for clubs in my area. I think the WordPress people overthink the blog set-up a bit. More flexibility rather than more bells and whistles is good. If I want to set up a website for bridge players, I don’t need tropical scenes or yoga poses.

Every theme has some sort of standard setup. But you can very easily replace those tropical scenes or yoga poses with photos of your own. Every theme has a very good explanation about possible customisations.
More flexibility goes hand in hand with more bells and whistles. -
Sure, but your admin page is mystifying. I’m okay with content being dropped in from yoga or botany. Then I want to erase it and put up my own. No easy way to see how to do that. Seriously: you’ve over-thought it. I’ve been blogging on your site for 14 years. When a user is accustomed to a pattern, she or he wants to start from known territory. Last night, I seriously considered shopping for another host site. If I wanted to learn something new, maybe something more suited to my project, and spend a few hours watching videos, maybe I’d go somewhere else.

Hello again,
If I want to set up a website for bridge players, I don’t need tropical scenes or yoga poses.
Since you didn’t mention the address of the site you need help with, my response relates only to free sites hosted here on WPcom.
There are over 200 themes available to you to activate on your WPcom site and if you don’t see them all when loading the theme showcase in your site, click the Show All button after the first group of themes.
Regardless of which theme you choose, you’ll need to add your own content to personalize it for your needs.

Post back here if you have more questions about this.
