WordPress Versions: host package vs website

    My website let me update to the latest WordPress version; however, my web server’s package manager says I have an older version. The package update says it will update to a newer version, but not newer than the latest version. When I tried updating the package, it reverts me back from the latest version to the newest version of that package. I need to make package updates and although I can just not upgrade the WordPress package, I fear future compatibility issues and I’m not sure what level of security I have right now.

    What I’ve tried:

    • I have tried updating the package and then tried updating on my website to the latest version, but I kept getting an “Automatic update failed” banner.
    • I have tried uninstalling the package, but it took down my site.
    • I have tried manually updating using an FTP client to move only specific folders from the latest version into the existing WordPress folder, but that took down my site.

    I have considered completely reinstalling WordPress, but would prefer not to because it could take me a while to fix out all the bugs with all of my existing content. As mentioned before, I can just ignore it but would like to be reassured that nothing will break later. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

    Hi there!

    To avoid confusion, there are three different “WordPress” at play here:

    1. The free, open-source WordPress software which powers your website.
    2. WordPress.org which is the open-source project that works on the WordPress software and where you can get the software for free to use on your own hosting provider.
    3. WordPress.com which is a managed hosting provider of the WordPress software and with whom you’re contacting now.

    Since your site is not hosted with us, we’re limited in what we can help with and advise. But I can get you pointed in the right direction to get help.

    The good news is that because you use the open-source variant of the WordPress platform (which functions differently than what we offer here on WordPress.com), help is available at the community forums here:

    The folks in the open-source forum are more familiar with these issues and are in the best position to help.
