WordPress very, very slow

I installed WordPress on a new server. My site has no visitors yet. Everything works very well, except that the display of the pages is much too slow: 0.4s on average…

At each page load, there are between 130 and 150 queries on the database. Each of them is very fast, the slowest being executed in 0.0018s. But 132*0.001=0.132s. So about 1/4 of the page generation time is related to SQL queries.

Where do the remaining 0.3s come from?

I specify that I installed and configured the W3 Total Cache plugin. Otherwise I don’t have any other plugins that could explain the missing loading 0.3s.

In addition, WordPress is installed on a 4-core dedicated server, with a 100GB SSD and 32GB of RAM. As there is no one on my site currently, the material resources are totally underused, I have checked.

Question: how can the site generate between 130 and 150 SQL queries with each page load? That’s crazy. Why doesn’t WordPress use a hard disk or RAM query cache?

I completely created another site with PHP and Mariadb, with a very strong audience: 450 million dynamic pages per month. On average, each page is loaded instantly: 0.02s. Why ? Because I cache all requests on Nvme SSDs or RAM partitions. So I don’t understand how WordPress was coded… more than a hundred requests for each page loaded, it’s crazy…

I specify that I use the very last version of WordPress.

So let me summarize the questions I would like to have answered:
    1. Why about 0.150s of SQL queries on each page?
    2. Where do the remaining 0.3s of page load come from? Is it disk access time because there are an insane number of files to load?

    Thanks for your help…

  • Hi,

It looks like your site is using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) but is hosted with another webhost.

We’re only able to provide support for WordPress websites that are hosted by us here at WordPress.com. For help with a WordPress site hosted elsewhere you’ll need to ask over at the WordPress.org forums:

    https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

Depending on the level of support that is included with your hosting plan, your webhost’s support team may also be able to assist.

If you want to know more about the differences between WordPress.com and the open-source WordPress software you can read this article:
