WordPress Video Player
-
Has anyone had any *recent* experience with the WordPress Video Player? Does it work well? Is the upload easy? I want to post about a 3-4 minute video (of pretty high quality) to a blog.
And, what do I need to do to be able to upload video to my blog directly? Don’t I need to buy a 1GB worth of space or something?
Thanks.

Yeah, I did that, but some of those FAQs are a bit old.
I did see a forum post in June where it said the beta video upload service was horrible. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=12545&page&replies=3
I just wanted to see if that was still the case with some more, preferably recent, data.

It is better in my opinion than youtube with a similar upload experience, but it is best to upload videos in non peak times is the only issue because a couple of times uploads have been left hanging for me if I try first thing in the morning or shortly after suppertime :)

Why not use one of the external services? That way you won’t have to worry about paying for extra memory with WordPress.
Vodpod has a great Firefox extension that lets you embed from most of the them, but if you find that it doesn’t, you can save it to Vodpod and try to embed from there. I did that earlier today and it worked fine. (Only a draft til mid-week, though.) If it can’t figure out the video you want in the blog, you can cut/paste the embed code manually.

Thanks for the replies. Let’s just say, for example, I don’t mind ponying up the extra money for WordPress Video. Is the quality and, more importantly, stability there such that people who view won’t think the blog/site is non-profressional?

It is in my opinion as good as any of the other free players out there. It is not the player that gives poor results, but rather a video quality that is too low (poor resolution) or too high (size is too large for average joe to download). The player itself does look professional to me :)

Thanks trent. And I should only be uploading this video one time with no real changes. So I can do that in the dead of night or morning ;-)

Do I just need to upgrade to 1 GB of space in order to upload video? As it stands by default, I can only upload from YouTube and other external sites.

The upgrade allows you to upload the following filetypes (not available by default):
mp3, ogg, wav, m4a, mov, wmv, avi, and mpg

Trent, thanks again. Sorry to be dense, but I just want to make sure before plunking down the $20. When you say “upgrade” you mean pay the $20, get 1 GB space and those file formats will be available to me.
Correct?

What filetypes can I upload? http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/07/what-filetypes-can-i-upload/
Currently you can upload the following: jpg, jpeg, png, gif, pdf, doc, ppt
With the space upgrade you can also upload: mp3, avi, ogg, m4a, mp4, mpg, mov, wav, and wmv. -
