WordPress Web site hosting
-
We are a dog club society and manage a web site using WordPress. This is currently hosted by a third part company and we are looking to switch to (potentially) WordPress using one of their packages, say Premium (possibly going higher later). The former have promised to let us have the web site files – so the question is ‘basically can we transfer these files to a web site provided by WordPress themselves?

Hi,
Word press has 2 options fro moving from a self hosted wordpress to wordpress.com :
Option 1: Use our Migration tool to move all your site’s content, plugins, and custom themes to WordPress.com.
Option 2: Use the Export/Import feature to import just your site’s content, including posts, pages, and media.
please see this guide here:

Thanks

Just looking at the web page packages offered by WordPress using blocks; this looks totally different to the WordPress web site that we have been using since 2012 – text and images are inputted directly on the pages and features include slide shows and sliders (comprising of Porfolio pages) – both these using commands. Even columns are done this way. So all our content/images/headings etc are in this format. Do you think we could import all this stuff onto, say the Premium package, to start with.
If it helps WordPress updated the site on the 5th July 2018 – WordPress 4.7.11 version (if this means anything).
The present position is that we are denied access to our site until we pay a grossly inflated charge to the hosting company. They have agreed though, that we could have the files to switch to another hosting company, in this case WordPress. An alternative would be to pay up for a month and copy/paste the content – not sure what to do about the domain name though, although we have a method for switching to another web site provider.
As you can see, this is a bit complicated. Hope you can help!! -

It’s not possible to migrate a site to us by uploading the site’s files themselves, assuming your host is offering to give you the core files/a full-site backup. To import a site that way you’d need to go with a different WordPress host, like Bluehost, that gives you access to directly upload core files to the server.
To migrate your content to WordPress.com, you will need access to the site, but you won’t need to manually copy-paste anything. Once you have access to the site, go to Tools ->Export in the dashboard to get a WordPress export file. That you can then import to a new site on our end. That file will contain all content on your site, and when you import it, we’ll also pull across any media files you have added to the media library.
Or if you want to use our Business Plan, you can use our full site migration option that @adarshhalan mentioned above.

The block editor was introduced in WordPress 5.0 in late 2018, but your content created before that should import just fine, even on our free plan. But you’d need to get a WordPress export file, as I explained above.

Kokkieh – thank you very much – it looks like a goer – just need to Ok this move with our committee.
One other possible pitfall – our Domain name is currently used on our website hosted by our third party host. When we do make progress and the web site is re-instated then I can start the process of transferring the files etc to WordPress but how do I go about transferring the domain name – it can’t be in two places at once. The registrar of this domain name is InternetBS. -
You can work on your site using the free WordPress.com subdomain – any site created here has one, it’s the address that ends with
.wordpress.comor.home.blog.After your site is ready you can map or transfer your custom domain.
If you map it – your domain will stay with the current registrar and you’ll need to go to their site to manage anything domain related.
If you decide to transfer the domain to WordPress.com, we’ll be your new registrar. This way you’ll manage everything from one place and you’ll be able to reach support with any domain related-issues :)

Is there any way I can determine how much space is occupied (relative to the overall capacity) on our WordPress website – I can’t find this information anywhere – I thought it might be somewhere on the dashboard, but I’ve spent an hour or more looking, to no avail.
The platform is WordPress 4.7.11 version 5/7/18. I could do with knowing how large the site is, as I intend to transfer to a WordPress hosting site. -
The only thing we track here is space used by the media library, so that’s all you’ll need to find out.
If you can access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these), you should be able to get the full size of the /wp-content/uploads/ directory.
Also, your hosting provider’s support may be able to tell you.
