WordPress wipes out another finished post. 2 lost now.

Since I couldn’t find a feedback form or e-mail, I figured I’d post it here and hopefully a moderator will see it and take action on it. I am a user of a WordPress.com hosted blog: http://www.imatravelninja.com.

I’ve now lost 6+ hours of work across two incidents of WordPress deleting my progress.

First issue: I created a post online before a trip and added all photos I’d need for it. I then departed and spent 5 hours writing an entire, finished post on my iPad. I get home, open WordPress online to proof it and publish it, but it’s blank on the website. I look at my iPad and it’s still in airplane mode. I take it off airplane mode and it syncs. Problem is, the website auto saved a blank version of the blog moments before when I opened it online, so it overwrites the entire complete post on my iPad. It’s gone forever, no way to retrieve and 5 hours wasted.

Today: I am working 100% online. I get a good portion of the post written, then go talk to a colleague. I come back and type for another hour to complete the content of the post. I go up and click “Save Draft” and a page comes up requesting my login credentials. I enter my info, assuming it will then save my progress, but instead it deleted all my progress and took me back to the last saved version.

I love the ease of WordPress, but I can’t continue to lose work. I’m 14 posts in and have already lost 2. I guess I’ll start writing the posts somewhere else and paste them in, but this is an issue that has to be resolved. With the iPad, it should have cached a version on the iPad for me to retrieve, or asked me permission to overwrite the post. Today, it should have warned me that it was not auto saving or that I was leaving the page and would lose unsaved content. I could have simply copy and pasted the post after logging in.

WordPress is too big of a resource to let these types of issues happen, I hope they are addressed and solved soon.

    Hello there,
I don’t have an iPad but I do have the link to this forum for you > http://ios.forums.wordpress.org/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting
This is a peer support forum and Staff monitor threads from time to time. If you want their attention then I recommend using the Help link on the top right hand corner of your Admin page to contact them and share your experience and issues with them directly.
    Hope this helps.

With regard to recovering your lost posts I can offer this step by step article in the hope it will be helpful > Recovering a lost blog post or page

P.S. I’m sorry this is happening to you. I think it’s always best to use an offline blog editor to create posts and pages and publish them to our blogs as they provide backups on our own computers. I apologize if that information is not helpful in your situation.

I appreciate the links. Unfortunately, they don’t address my issues. My posts are still there, they just reverted to an older version (in the second case) and a new blank version (in the first case). The issue with the iPad is obviously a problem of syncing between two devices and determining which takes precedence. WordPress apparently assumes the latest save should take precedence, but that’s not always the case as my example highlighted. What’s bad is instead of saving what was on the iPad as an older auto save point, it simply wiped it out completely.

    Thanks again for the suggestions.

You’re welcome and best wishes re: contacting Staff and resolving this.

Drafts aren’t safe. Safer method while preparing a post: set it as privately published instead of draft.

I’ve lost drafts, too, and my post was published as an older version. what to do?

    @swoessner
I’ve been here 6 years and only raincoaster has been here a couple of months longer than me. The answer I gave you will not change simply because you hop form thread to thread asking it over and over. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/help-autosave-deleted-an-hour-back?replies=7 If the post in question had been published and indexed then you could retrieve it from Google’s cache but it’s a draft.

While this issue is going on use an offline blog editor to make your posts. It’s clear there is some sort of bug affecting longer posts and an offline editor will save your work.
