WordPress with existing server
-
I’m sorry if this has already been covered in the support and forums – I’ve been browsing for answers but I’m still confused.
I created a wordpress.com blog for the elementary school library in which I work. However, I realized that without paying for an upgrade, I cannot upload the video and pictures I was hoping to post. The school already HAS its own server though, so how do I use a wordpress blog but store the media on the school’s already existing server? Do I want to be using wordpress.org instead? Do I need to export? What are my options?
Thanks!

G’day
Every time you post to this forum we require that you post the complete and clickable URL for the blog in question starting with http://
You can either post the URL each time or you can link it to your username.
Here’s how to link your username to your blog in your blog Dashboard –> Users –> Your Profile. Then scroll down to where it says ‘Website‘ and fill in the address of your blog and then click ‘Update Profile‘. -
Thank you. I do not have an answer for you but I do suspect that answer will be “no”. I believe you need to contact Staff directly for a definitive answer http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

Yes, you can posts pictures from your own server, but to be honest, if your hosting that much media from your server anyway, you probably take a day (or a weekend if you’re new to setting up websites), and set up a wp.org installation.
Basically, put your pictures on your sever, and make sure that they are publicly viewable, (chmod them to 755, or at least chown to apache), and than you can link to them from your wp.com blog. Also, as for video, I would recommend using a service such as http://blip.tv. You will still have to pay for the VideoPress upgrade, or because it’s open source, you could take a crash course in whatever they used to make VideoPress, and implement it on your own server).
Does that help?

This is incorrect if a person uses one of the approved 3rd party video sites like Youtube, Vimeo, Blip.tv, then their is NO need for the videopress upgrade to have the video show up on the blog in a blog post or page.

Erm…woops, sorry, that’s what I meant to say, it just came out poorly. If you use a 3rd party service such as blip or youtube, you don’t have to buy videopress either way, but if you do use videopress, you will still have to buy it whether or not you are on wp.com or wp.org (or if you’re savvy enough to implement the code on your own servers).
