I purchased a domain from Bluehost – but then realized I should probably just use wordpress.com. Is there a way to connect the two without paying more?

Did you purchase just the domain name from Bluehost? Or did you also purchase a hosting plan?
If you want to stay with wordpress.com then there would be an additional charge. Take a look here for instructions on how to do that.

If you purchased a hosting plan with Bluehost you could install WordPress there and have more control over the site.
