WordPress.com Change of Registrant policy help?
-
Hello,
I’m attempting to transfer my wordpress.com domain to Blue Host, so I can download WordPress.org for my site.
I went through the process spelled out on the page “Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar.”
I changed the name servers, as it mentioned.
I got the transfer code.
Created my Blue Host account and put in the code to transfer.
Received the verification email, verified it.All seemed good to go, then the status on Blue Host reads: Rejected by Wild West Domains, Inc.
Then I get this email from WordPress:
“The transfer you requested has been declined because you opted-in to a transfer lock for 60 days when you agreed to the WordPress.com Change of Registrant policy.
For security reasons, when you change the registrant’s first name, last name, or organization name, you consent to a 60 day lock on transferring the domain name. Because you have provided your consent, Section 3(6) of the ICANN Policy on Transfer of Registration between Registrars permits us to decline your transfer request.”
I’m very confused… when did I change information that would lead to this lock? I followed the instructions.
I’m also concerned this is the first time I’m hearing about the company “Wild West Domains.” But that’s another topic.
So, how do I move forward? At what point in the process did I lock my information without knowing it?
I’m so, so frustrated.

Here is a previous support response to this issue:
This is explained on the screen where you update your contact information and was also explained in the confirmation email sent to the old email address on the domain contact information. The confirmation link sent to the old email address also contained an option to opt out of this lock. If that person did not select the option to opt out of the lock, then the transfer lock is applied.
This entire process is explained here:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/update-contact-information/#email-or-name-changes
It works this way because ICANN, the organization that regulates all top-level domains on the web, decided it should work this way. I realize this is frustrating, but registrars have no choice in the matter. We have to apply this lock if changes are made to the email address, organization, first name or last name on a domain.
Your one option is to try and update the contact information again, so a new set of confirmation emails are sent out. You should then be able to opt out of the lock via the confirmation link sent to the old (current) email address.
If it does not show you that option it means the lock cannot be lifted at this point, and you won’t be able to transfer the domain for 60 days. In that case you can still map the domain to another hosting provider by changing the name servers or IP address. If you get that information from the new hosting provider I’d be happy to add them to your domain for you, or you can add them yourself via the instructions here:

Change Name Servers

Hi, thanks for the response.
Maybe I am missing something, but I did not update my contact information. Nor did I receive any confirmation email that I did. That’s why I’m confused why it locked.
Unless it automatically updates it when you gain the transfer code? Which would be silly, as it would cancel out the action you are attempting.

Hi there,
I am adding modlook to this thread so one of our staff will help you with the domain transfer.
Sorry for the inconvenience caused. -
Hi @lanalauren
I see from the previous post which you’ve made in forum that,
you stated that you’ve deleted domain from WordPress.com and got it back after reactivating again that might be reason for that so you’ll have to wait until someone from staff will reply to this thread. -
Here is how I understand it:
Your website on WordPress is:
alanahollanddotcom.wordpress.comYour website on Bluehost.com is:
alanaholland.com
It is registered with the domain provider Wild West Domains and they show alanaholland.com is hosted by Bluehost. Perhaps it used to point to wordpress.com and this why they are not allowing a change, when it doesn’t appear a change needs to be made.alanaholland.com appears ready to go over on Bluehost. The Bluehost version of WordPress has already been installed. And here would be the instructions to copy your current wordpress.com website over to bluehost.com
https://my.bluehost.com/cgi/help/wp_migrateNow that being said, you might have users who still find you at:
alanahollanddotcom.wordpress.com, in which case you will need
to keep your wordpress.com site and redirect your site to alanholland.com. Here are the directions for that:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/Hopefully I have understood the dynamics of your issue and have not confused the issue further.

Ok, thanks for the clarification of Wild West Domains.
I am OK with losing the information on my alanahollanddotcom.wordpress.com page. I never officially launched the page anyway. I planned on starting fresh on Blue Host, but with the same domain name.
So if it is ready to go, why am I getting rejected, and given the 60-day lock email?
Or perhaps I’m mixing up two different problems?

So if you go to:
http://alanaholland.com
you see the site is there waiting on you.
Click on the admin logon , put in your Bluehost WordPress credentials and start setting up your site in their version of WordPress.
You could migrate your old site if you want to or just start fresh. Migrating is nothing more than exporting the old and importing the new.
It certainly looks like your website is being hosted where you would like it to be.Somehow I think you are somewhere else in Bluehost trying to add your domain, when it is already done? So don’t go to Bluehost and logon…..go to your own website and logon. I am sorry it is so confusing.
Try what I have suggested and see if you can move forward. Update us on how it goes.

Ok, so it appears to let me log in to my WordPress account that I installed on Blue Host… and edit the wordpress account from there. So that’s a win!
What concerns me is on Blue Host, it still says my Domain transfer is rejected by Wild West Domains.
I’m also still seeing the domain listed on my wordpress.com account.
What am I missing?

I am so happy you can access your site.
So your domain is currently registered at Wild West Domains. That is the same as saying it is registered at Network Solutions, Go Daddy or any of the other multitudes of domain registrars. What you are attempting to do is move your domain to Bluehost as the domain registrar. Or at least that is how it appears to me. But that is unnecessary at the moment. You can leave it at Wild West for now or forever. You could wait out the 6 months and then try to move it again. Your domain doesn’t expire on Wild West until 5-24-2018, so you have some time.
I buy domains from Go Daddy but I host them on Bluehost. The only reason I would move the registration to Bluehost would be bad service from Go Daddy. Otherwise it makes no difference who is the registrar and who is the host. Actually the company who hosts your site makes a big difference, but that is another topic. Bluehost is one of the best…I have been using them for over a decade.
So you are free to move forward. If it still bothers you, give Bluehost a call so they can confirm. Their support is excellent. -
Hi there,
The domain, alanaholland.com, is still registered with us.
I see a month ago you restored the domain from redemption in this thread:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/deleted-domain-when-will-it-be-released-from-redemption
Our domain registrar sometimes places a transfer lock on domains when they’re restored from redemption. They shouldn’t – only a previous transfer or a change of contact info should cause a domain to be locked – but they do.
I see the domain’s name servers are currently pointing away from WordPress.com already, but please confirm if you still want to transfer the domain and I can email our registrar to ask them to remove that lock.
The only reason I would move the registration to Bluehost would be bad service from Go Daddy. Otherwise it makes no difference who is the registrar and who is the host.
While this is true, many people prefer to only have to pay one provider for both hosting and domain. And keep in mind that a hosting plan might actually already include the cost of a domain registration, in which case it makes sense to move your domain to that host, rather than paying a different registrar for something that you are also already paying your hosting provider for.
Note that Wild West Domains IS WordPress.com.
Wild West Domains is NOT WordPress.com. WWD is a completely different company and we don’t control them in any way. WWD is a domain registrar, and we are a reseller who use them to register domains. We are also not the only reseller who makes use of them, so if a domain shows WWD as the registrar it is not a certainty that the domain was purchased through WordPress.com.
That said, if someone registered a domain through us, they cannot get support directly from WWD – if we sold the domain we are the only ones who can provide support for it. So for all practical purposes, we are the domain registrar in this case.
