WordPress.com DNS, Domain Mapping and Subdomain Mapping

I am currently looking to use my WordPress.com blog with a custom domain. I already have the domain, and I see that it is $13/year to use my blog with my custom domain. I am confused about a few things though:

    1. From what I can tell, in order to use a custom domain, I have to use WordPress.com’s nameservers. This means that WordPress.com becomes my DNS provider, right? I’ve looked in the support pages for more details on WordPress.com’s capabilities as a DNS provider, but the information appears to be limited. It looks like I can do MX records, CNAME, and TXT records, although the TXT records have a 125 character limit. Are there any other sources of data of the DNS capabilities?

    2. If I use my custom domain with my WordPress.com blog, I still want the ability to map a sub domain to a completely external site. This appears to be possible with the $13 upgrade, but WordPress.com also sells domain redirect as a separate upgrade. Is this separate fee only for cases if I am not paying the $13 to map my blog to a custom domain?

    3. Are there any other ways to use a custom domain without using WordPress.com as my DNS provider? I don’t have a problem paying the $13, but I would rather keep my DNS if possible. I saw in post 2070964 in the forum that it appears to be possible since they give the IP address of WordPress.com’s servers. What are the chances that those IP addresses will change? Also, are those the IP’s off all WordPress.com’s servers, or do I need to find out what servers my blog is hosted on?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give in helping me understand this better.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    1. We have complete DNS capabilities. Is there something specific you’re trying to do that you want to make sure you can do through us?

    2. Yep! You only need one of these options.

    3. We do not use static IP addresses for sites here at WordPress.com so our IP addresses change on a regular basis. If you want to go the IP route, let me know and I can grab the current ones for you.

Thanks for getting back to me Shawna. So how do I map a subdomain to a page on an external site?

  • Unknown's avatar

You’ll need the IP address, or other underlying address of the page. Then you can add a CNAME record for the subdomain you want, that points to that domain.

If you tell me the subdomain you want to use and the page to direct it to I can give you more specific directions, but here’s a general overview of how to add DNS records in our system:

Unfortunately, I’ve tried it with a CNAME, but it won’t save. The way we have it now, which I would like to preserve is dimetosssignup.pack227.org redirects to: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0d4fafab28abfb6-stbonaventure.

Are you trying to do this in our system here at WordPress.com? In order for the records saved here to be active, you’ll need to change your name servers to the following:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

That signupgenius link you gave doesn’t seem to be active. If you could give me an updated link and let me know when you’ve changed your name servers, I can help you get this working.

Yes, I am trying to use the WordPress.com system, and I realize in order for the link to work I need to have changed my name servers, but since I can’t even enter in the DNS configuration into the WordPress.com system, there isn’t any point in changing the name server configuration.

Having said that, I did delete the form on signupgenius.com this morning since that particular event is over now. I do have another URL for you to use though, http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0d4fafab28abfb6-scouting. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks for the info. It looks like our system does not accept this type of CNAME record. Are you able to get this working with your current registrar?

If you are, then I can provide you with IP addresses to set up your domain. Note, these IPs will change in the future. When that happens, just drop us a line and we can tell you the new ones.

If not, then I’d suggest creating a link on your site for this. You could use an Image Widget or a custom link in your menu.

Yes, it works fine with my current registrar. Thanks for trying. Please send me the current list of IP addresses.

Also, can you give me an idea of approximately how often the IPs change, and when they do if all of them change at the same time, or is it only a few at a time?

Here’s the currently list of IP addresses:

    • 66.155.11.238
    • 192.0.80.250
    • 192.0.78.16
    • 66.155.9.238
    • 192.0.81.250
    • 76.74.254.123
    • 76.74.254.120

Please be sure to use at least two IP addresses when mapping the domain.

I’m not sure how often these change, but I’m fairly certain they don’t all change at the same time.

Let me know if you have other questions!

OK, thanks. You said to use at least two. Is there any reason why I shouldn’t just put in all seven?

  • Unknown's avatar

Nope! There’s no reason not to, you just need at least two in order for things to work smoothly. :)
