WordPress.com domain but wanting to run wordpress.org

    Hi there,

I want to run my blog through with wordpress.org. The first thing that it said for me to do was to get a domain name. I got a free domain name from .com and have it hosted by hostia. I installed wordpress through my hosting site as well. I assumed it was .org but I have not been prompted to create nor given a wordpress.org admin name. It is my understanding that wordpress.org is where I want to be, but I don’t know how to get there. Is that possible? Please help.

WordPress.ORG is just the development, distribution and support site for the wordpress software. They do not host website.

I know I definitely must sound like an amateur, which I am. But, does no one have a .wordpress.org site that they blog from. My friend said she did and had more capabilities to customize than I do now through the wordpress package that she downloaded because it was wordpress.org not .com

I will ask her tomorrow at work, but if you have any feedback it would be appreciated.
    Thanks

If you installed wordpress software at hostia, then you are on “wordpress.ORG” but that software is bare-bones. You have to add all the capabilities through plugins and such. WordPress.COM has a lot of features that are not by default in the .ORG version of the software, and part of the reason for that is that at .COM you cannot install plugins or edit the underlying theme PHP script files, so wordpress adds some of the advanced capabilities in the backend for all of us to use.

WordPress.ORG software takes work to flesh it out.

    Nice website sacredpath.

    So a couple of questions.

I am on wordpress.org even thought my domain name is wordpress.com?

I understand the .org is bare bones and has to be built out so to speak. The .com has more default features but less ability to be customized. Is this correct?

If so, I think I want the ability to really put some work into it and get a really custom look. How do I get wordpress.org fully?

Last question (I think) – Do I have the ability to install plugins?

I kindly suggest you ask your WordPress.org-related questions on the WordPress.org forums:
