WordPress.com import/export not working guided transfer Q?
-
Hi guys, I have been trying to import my blog to a new .org site which wasn’t working and guided transfer wasn’t an option due to a bug.
I was told to give it a few days and now both options are available but I have tried to do it myself first and the export/import still hasn’t worked.. posts are missing and things duplicated when they shouldn’t have.
If I use the guided transfer will the old content fit nicely in my new theme on .org (I assume it’s like a drag and drop into the new theme?) Since I’ve tried to import it it now has multiples of some posts (home I cannot remove and there at 7 versions linking to the new .org home and also the .com home which is confusing!) Plus other parts and images missing. If I select guided transfer will they clean it all up so it’s just one version moved over?
Also, what happens to my old .com blog when they redirect to the new site which I currently have a ‘coming soon’ holding page. Will they not be able to see anything until I reveal the new site?
I want to have time to edit my content in the new site and then do a relaunch.
All help is appreciated!

It’s not a drag and drop process, but if you go with the guided transfer option, the content will be moved for you in a way that works in the new theme. As for duplicates and the like, your best bet is to clear the old data out of the new site and do a clean import. The guided transfer can help you with that as well.
If you decide against Guided Transfer, I can point you in the right direction for how to move everything yourself, but if you decide to purchase the support, it’s best to do that and let them answer your questions.

Hello @lizthefair, Thank you so much for replying (love your job title!). I have tried to clear the data and redo a new import but it only transferred half my content and still for some reason duplicated a million posts and pages. I just can’t for the life of me work out why.
I am so determined to try and do this myself if I can before needing the guided transfer – can you help guide me in the right direction??? Thanks

What process are you using for this step?
I can’t help you much on the import side, but I can take a look at your export. Is this the content you are moving?

I am deleting all the files that did work except my header etc and then retrying the process (export my .com content to an xml file then import in the .org site)
Yes that’s the old site I want to move the content from. All help appreciated!

Are you making sure the deleted posts are cleared from your trash as well as the active pages of your site?
-
Yes, I deleted all pages, images, posts, tags and categories and then cleared the trash.
Super annoying as when I do a new import it comes back with a vengeance with duplicated pages, posts and missing content too. Sometimes it times out as well and just doesn’t import at all.

That’s probably a problem with your export file then. Let me see if I have better luck. I’ll send you a private email with a link to a new copy of site export.

Thank you! I will try once more. Can you migrate my subscribers and stats to my new website too?

I can, but we should wait until you get your content working as expected. Moving the stats before moving content results in a messy stats page.
