WordPress.com name not in use, but shows as 'existing' when I try to create my blog.

I had a catchy idea for a blog name and decided to create an account using said name to realise I already had a wordpress.com account. So signed in, deleted the old blog I made in 2011 and tried to register the new one with the catchy name only to see an error message saying it is already in use… but it is not. When I initially went to create the blog, the name was showing as available. It is only when I sign in and try to create a blog that the name shows as already being in use.
When I search for the blog name ending with .wordpress.com , it also shows as not existing.

The address is TheThriftyMillennial.wordpress.com. It was previously available, however since logging into my own account it is showing an error message which suggests it already exists.

When an account is created here, the username is reserved as a WordPress.com address for that person. Someone has already created an account called thethriftymillennial so thethriftymillennial.wordpress.com is reserved for their account — this is why you are able to create a site using that address.
There are two options going forward:
- Create a site using a free WordPress.com address which is a variation of thethriftymillennial.wordpress.com
- Register a custom domain like thethriftymillennial.com

I’m just confused by that as it was free to use right up til the minute I tried to sign up with my email address and the “this email address is already in use” message popped up.
By variation, do you mean adding a number or additional letter for example to the url?

We require each account to use a unique email address so it sounds like you may have another WordPress.com account. Which email address did you try? If you type the email address in full, it will be redacted automatically but I will be able to see it.
