WordPress.com News Not Sending Email Alerts On Time And Sometimes Not At All

    Hello,

    I would like to once again report a problem that I have been having for months where email alerts are not being sent on time (hours or a day late) or not being sent at all (no they are not in my Spam Folder) when I am following/subscribed to WordPress.com News (http://en.blog.wordpress.com/) with email alerts set to send immediately, and this issue seems to be connected with another problem that I also reported before this year several times:

    I only have this problem with WordPress.com News, no other official WordPress.com blog/website or any other regular blog gives me this problem, and un-following/un-subscribing and re-subscribing/re-following to WordPress.com News does not fix this problem; and this problem happens with Gmail and even another email service that I have tested it with.

    For example, I do not think that an email alert about the new Twenty Fourteen theme was even sent to me (but I could be wrong, and no it was not in my Spam Folder) and so I found out about it on accident when manually looking at WordPress.com News, and the other email alerts from that day and other days almost always come hours late and sometimes email alerts might send a day late; and so I miss things sometimes or find out about them late unless I manually go to WordPress.com News and/or look at it in the Dashboard and/or look at it in the WordPress.com Reader when it works properly for WordPress.com News (I think it has been working properly recent, but I could be wrong because sometimes WordPress.com News posts do not show up in the WordPress.com Reader properly (on time or at all, but this problem does not seem to be happening now, but I could be wrong).

    I am not sure if I am the only person with this problem or not, but I just wanted to report it so that maybe the WordPress.com Team could fix it one day because I only have this problem with WordPress.com News.

    Hi John,

    We do expect that there sometimes can be a delay with the WordPress.com News blog. We have about 13 million people subscribed to that blog so while we start the process of e-mailing everyone as soon as the post is published, it can take a few or more hours to get through the whole list.

    Our first priority is not to disrupt everyone else’s notifications, so we take our time with the News notifications.

    Please do reply to this thread as soon as you notice a particular post’s notification didn’t get sent to you (allow, say, six hours after it was published) and I can search the logs for you.

    @Brandon, I notice an interruption in notifications on the WordPress.com News when there are several posts within a short period. For example, on November 20th, I also did not receive the notice about Twenty Fourteen.

    And I also noted earlier this year that there was a month-long interruption in the email notifications from the WordPress.com News blog (mid-August to mid-September).

    Personally, I now use a number of methods to receive notifications so as not to miss new News posts, but I still enjoy being able to read them on my phone’s email.

    I see, thank you for explaining that Kraftbj, but sometimes a few do not send at all; but that is rare, so I guess this is resolved, and if I come across something that does not send in a day or two I might report that.

    Thank you for sharing that Justjennifer, I did not receive an email alert about Twenty Fourteen either, so it is good to hear that I was not the only one. ;)

    @justjennifer – I’ll check on that. Typically, they look to only have a post a day, so multiple ones a day may very well have ran aground of the fix we put in for that incredibly long disruption and not been noticed.

    Howdy,

    In the particular case of the Twenty Fourteen post, there was an error when it was published that disrupted some of our automated process for that post (notification e-mails, publicize, etc).

    It’s not a widespread issue and we have a workaround that prevents it from happening moving forward. Thanks!
