WordPress.com Now Blocked in China
-
chronotron, I will let you know next week when I get back.
Looks like I will need to have my own host or use proxy. What a pain. -

Anyone who works for a company that restricts web browsing (most large corporations these days) has experienced something like China’s internet connection. You sit at your desk and try to access online games or comics or adult material, and the request from your computer is blocked by the company’s IT dept. The gaming site never even received the request from your browser.

I can access wordpress.com again too now from within China without a proxy. Let’s hope it stays accessible.

Short lived. It’s inaccessible again. Some websites become accessible and inaccessible quite regularly in China. I often have trouble with Apple.com – of all sites – for example and sometimes need to try a few times before I am able to access it. I think with Apple it may have something to do with the way Apple handles traffic through akadns.net. It seems that domain name rerouting triggers the firewall. For example, I can’t access my brother-in-law’s website via the domain http://www.tywilkins.com/ (I think he uses GoDaddy to do the domain name redirecting) but I have no problem accessing it directly via http://www.portfolios.com/profile.html?MyUrl=TY . Could it be that WP.com is doing some sort of domain name rerouting to handle requests coming from various parts of the world that is triggering the firewall, as the case seems to be with Apple? (I don’t really know much about networking so my apologies if my theory is completely wrong or incomprehensible).
Anyway, I wouldn’t be surprised to see off and on access to WP.com for a while – better than none though, right?

Larryau: It really isn’t a suprise, seeing that wordpress is one of the few blog providers to volunatry censor their contents in China…
Just in case anyone thinks there’s merit in the above, the only content we’re actively censoring are spam and seo blogs which nobody likes anyway. It’s the Chinese Government that is doing the blocking.
-
And now it works again. Anyone else in China able to confirm this on again off again behavior?
-
Well of course they do. After all, those are hopefully putting American dollars in the hands of those folks, right?

Live from Shanghai… WP is blocked, long live WP!
I would have to update through proxy now :(
Or move (*more shudder*) -
UGH! I got hits from China with my old blog at Blogger. Now those people can’t see my new blog? :( Does anyone know if it will ever be banned in the United Arab Emirates? When I was hosted on Deansplanet.com, my friend from there couldn’t see my blog even though I was on Blogger. He can see my new blog now here at WordPress. Just don’t get banned in UAE !!!!

At these two weeks, I found I could not access my blog at wordpress.com from the network at China, neither from the access of CNC and CMCC. If I configure my browser to use anonymous proxies at abroad, then it’s ok. So I am sure wordpress.com is blocked at China. blogspot.com is blocked too.

Add .nyud.net:8090 to the domain name portion of the URL, like:
http://ubuntu.wordpress.com.nyud.net:8090/about/Advertise your blogs url as the url above, so your friends can access it still.
Profit!

You can also use it with your browser, as a setting:
