What a stinking shame but as our Moderator drmike has said there’s nothing WordPress can do about it.

That ubuntu workaround might help individuals. Maybe put that in a sidebar or something? Has anyone else tested it?

I use the Coral .nyud.net:8090 workaround from time to time to access blocked content from here in China. In general I use Firefox with Tor for getting around the blocks here, and Safari for a direct connection. I find Coral to be an especially convenient tool for when I am in Safari and don’t have Firefox open and just want to check something quick on Wikipedia or another blocked site.

Hi, not sure if this is the place, but here goes…
I’m moving to China in a few months. I am a teacher, and at my current school I operate a wordpress.com blog for students. I’d like to do the same thing at my new school in Shanghai. I know there are plenty of ways for me to workaround the firewall and use the dashboard so I’m not too concerned about me being able to add posts etc. I’m more concerned that my students won’t be able to access it, and for obvious reasons I can’t just go around recommending my students use Tor etc (though I’m sure plenty do already).Would a feasible alternative be for me to purchase a domain name and use the Domains feature of the wordpress dashboard to ‘put’ my wordpress blog there for others to access? Do people think that this will get around the ‘great firewall’ or will my students still be routed through the wordpress.com domain and get blocked anyway on their way the the site?

No – they are blocking by IP address, not domain name. My blog is blocked there (according to http://www.greatfirewallofchina.net/test/) and I have the domain name upgrade. Sorry, to disappoint, but I think the only way to do it would be to get a separate wordpress instance and host it elsewhere. -
Looks like I need to start looking into hosting my own wordpress blog then: better start hitting the books! Thanks for the advice.

I’m based in Vietnam, and should the government here get wind of posts they don’t like they’ll block this site in an instant. Any advice on circumventing?

seems to be blocked right now. both my blog and a friends are not accessible from China. Anyone have an idea for a solution?

The solutions I see mentioned in this thread:
1- Mirror or move your WordPress blog to an unblocked service.
Pro: people in China can read your blog.
Con: confusion and lose the Google juice sent to the other blog.2- Put the suffix .nyud.net:8090 on your blog name. (I have not verified this works to get around the block)
Pro: generally keep the same address for your blog.
Con: Not sure people can click around your blog, since all links would have the non 8090 version.3- Host your own WordPress.
Pro: not blocked
Con: increased cost and hassle from WP.com, a service I like quite a lot.Anyone else have further ideas?

Got back results from the .nyud.net:8090 solution from a friend in China who checked my blog:
“There seems to be a few mistakes with the page though – I see all the video links but none of the pictures.”
I upload the photos onto WordPress.com, but use Youtube for the video. I guess this means that the best solution is to host photos elsewhere in order to make my blog visible within China.
All very frustrating!
Raincoaster: Are you suggesting Archive.org as a way to view the blog in China? I’ll check it out, but I’d really like to find a way for people to view my blog without going through the loops of proxy surfing.

I am getting ready to travel to China for 3 weeks and was searching here to find out if I would be easily able to update my blog while in China. So, it looks like the answer is no, right? Does adding that suffix work well? If I moved my blog, what blogs are unblocked? Thanks for the help!
