I’m happy to help!
To put it simply, WordPress.com is great for folks who want to build a slick-looking website or blog with minimal fuss.
The self-hosted version, available at WordPress.org, is for those who don’t mind doing a little technical work in exchange for total control and extreme customizability.
This guide will help you decide which is right for you:

I want the customizing and control over the site, I am worried about the tech part, so I am not sure which one to chose. How much control and customizing do you have on WordPress.com with the highest upgrade option. And how much do you have compared to WordPress.org. What more is offered on WordPress.org compared to the highest upgrade on WordPress.com. -
Hi @dirtroadlivin, I hope you don’t mind me jumping in to help.
WordPress.com is great if you don’t want to deal with the technical stuff. You can still customize the theme with CSS if you have the upgrade for that, and we can help. WordPress.com is also good for its community.
WordPress.org is more technical, but if you know how to do the technical stuff you can accomplish things we can’t do here.
If it helps, it’s a lot like the difference between a restaurant and a recipe. At a restaurant you still have a lot of customization options, but you don’t get to bring in your own ingredients or take over the kitchen ;) And if you’re making your own, it isn’t super difficult but it does take some know-how and practice, as well as cleanup and safety practices. Does that help?
What do you want to do with your site? Maybe we can help point you in the right direction.
