WordPress.com or WordPress.org?

I am a web designer and I have always created self-hosted websites with html coding and Dreamweaver. This time, a new client insisted that I design a site where they could easily do the updates, and recommended that I use WordPress. After purchasing the Premium Upgrade, I found out that I am only limited to the themes you have on there., none of which the client wants. Also, all of these themes are for blog only… but they do not want a blog. I feel that I was misguided and would like a full refund if possible. If not, could you please advise me on what other options I may have? I understand WordPress.org allows for using 3rd party themes… is there a way to transfer everything over there? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi there – correct, outside themes can’t be uploaded to WordPress.com, although we do have over 200 themes you can use: http://themes.wordpress.com/

You also can use WordPress.com to create a website rather than a blog – it just depends on how you set your theme up.

Here’s an article that explains the differences between WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress, that should help you decide where best to host the site: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If self-hosted WordPress is a better option for you, you’ll first need to obtain web hosting. We have some recommendations here:
    http://get.wp.com/hosting/

We have a guide for moving your site here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

You can move your domain to your new site in this way:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/

I’m happy to refund your upgrade for you – just let me know. We can only refund new domains within 48 hours, but I can remove the rest of the upgrades and refund $73.00, which is the $99.00 less the $26.00 per year cost of a privately registered domain. You will likely want to keep the domain anyway, to use it with the new site. :)
