WordPress.com pages take too long to load and often time out

I’m having a problem:
– my blog has suddenly become too slow to use. This started some time last week. At first it was just pages being really slow to load (i.e. minutes per page), but now it’s become so bad that half the time I can’t even load pages at all – it tries for a while and then I get a (in Firefox) ‘the connection was interrupted while the page was loading’ message. Trying repeatedly I can often get to the main page eventually, but it’s hard to get to any particular post, or even just to log in. In fact, the last day I haven’t been able to log in at all (though see below).Now, I’ve been trying some things to work out where the problem might be. So:
– it turns out that all or most other wordpress.com sites have this problem for me. WordPress’ own pages (like these forums, and the support page I went through to get here) take a minute or more to load, but do load eventually. Randomly-selected other wordpress.com blogs either time out entirely or else take minutes to load. Only wordpress.com thing that I’ve no problem with is the http://www.wordpress.com front page itself, which loads instantly
– I don’t have this problem with any other websites, including wordpress blogs not hosted at wordpress.com.
– I CAN log into my wordpress account directly from the wordpress.com front page with little difficulty, and from there can get to my blog stats page, ‘my activity’ page (including excerpts from my blog posts), and so on. But I CAN’T get to my blog itself from here, or any of the individual pages. It seems I can get to my blog while logged out (with difficulty), or I can log in not through my blog, but I can’t get to my blog while logged in!
– Once I’ve loaded the main page of my blog (while logged out), I seem to be able to use the calendar widgit to show me particular pages, but I still can’t (reliably) open the pages themselves (eg to read comments).
– I’ve asked an assortment of other people on different browsers and OSs, and none of them have had any problem opening my blog, nor mentioned any problem opening other wordpress sites either.I’ve tried:
– using a different browser. I get exactly the same problem in Firefox 22.0, Internet Explorer 10, and Opera 12.16.
– clearing cookies, caches and histories from all three browsers
– flushing DNS
– checking that there’s nothing in the hosts fileSo it’s not just a problem with wordpress, because then everyone else would be having a problem. It’s not a problem with my internet connection, because then I’d be having a problem with other sites as well. It’s not a problem with my browsers, because I’ve tried three of them, one of which I’ve virtually never used before (certainly not for wordpress), and I’ve cleared the things you’re told to clear on them, and besides it’s only a problem I get wordpress.com sites (and my blog in particular). And I’m not aware of any more general problem with my computer, either. (I tried using a different computer, but the only one I could find has something wrong with it and loads EVERY page extremely slowly, so I can’t narrow it down to computer or router; I had a look at the settings on the router and didn’t see anything really obvious, but I don’t really understand too much of that stuff so I may certainly have missed something). So I don’t know what’s wrong – presumably some interaction between multiple things that individually are working fine.
I’m using Windows 7.
I should maybe also mention: shortly before this problem began, I noticed that every time I went to a new page while logged in on wordpress (pages on my blog or anywhere else where I have my logged-in bar across the top of the page) the ‘new comment’ button was lit up to tell me there was a new comment on my blog – even though there wasn’t. (And clicking on this button to show recent activity had/has the same too-slow-to-load problem, even though it’s just a popup menu not a whole new page). There’s a fair chance this problem is coincidental, I guess, but I thought I should mention it in the interests of completeness.
So, there we are. Sorry to have dumped so many details on you, but I thought it might save some time if I said everything.
