WordPress.COM Permalinks?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I am very interested in altering permalinks from by blog. I’m having a little trouble reaching out to the online community. aka; I have never had ANY web traffic from search engines.
    As I was scoping around, I realized there seems to be no way to alter permalinks on a wordpress.COM blog. Is this true? If not, then how?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    It’s not true. But why in GOD’s name would you do this? It’s a terrible, horrible, UNSPEAKABLY BAD idea from an SEO perspective.

    One of the single most destructive things you can do to your blog, in terms of search engine visibility, is fart around changing permalinks.

    I’m sure the experienced volunteers here will be happy to help you, if only you can clarify why exactly you wish to do this. Because without that perspective it appears to be madness.

    Yes I was wondering the same (and raincoaster answered my question), personally I dislike having the date in the url because it makes it near impossible for anyone but perhaps search engines to type in a url from memory.

    You can’t eliminate the date from a WP.com blog, but you can from an externally hosted WP.org one. But once the permalink is up, don’t mess with it.

    @vladzhirnov

    At the risk of getting myself in trouble, a few observations, you have not much content, no title on your blog, not indexed by Google.

    A few suggestions: register your blog with Google with their webmaster tools, add a title to your blog, add more content and use good titles to your posts.

    Look at your blog and ask yourself: What would I need to type into Google to get my blog to show up on a search engine. And if you say “poetry” you are now one of 119,000,000 entries. Also ask yourself “what am I offering that will make people other than my personal friends visit?”

    Good luck

    Good advice.

    As far as getting on the search engines, each time you post, wordpress automatically pings all the major search engines, so even if you do not verify your blog with google, bing and yahoo, they will know of your existence and will index you. It may take a few weeks, but you will start showing up in searches.

    WordPress makes it quite easy to verify your blog with google, bing and yahoo if you want to speed up the process: http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/ .

    It takes time to build up page rank with the search engines, so just keep on posting and soon you will be showing up higher in searches.

    @thesacredpath – good catch – I overlooked it. Thanks

    Good point on WordPress calling the search engines. When I first started using WordPress.org on my boating safety web site I had made a change to my main site and would Google the title of the new information every day and after 2 weeks still no show, about that time I posted an article on the WordPress part of my site and saw the search engines showed up in about 2 hours. And yes I started migrating everything to the WordPress part of the site, and WordPress now drives my whole modest web site.

    And the biggest thing about WordPress.COM – is you don’t need to worry about a lot of webmaster things, you can just work on your content. I have a couple of blogs for friends on WordPress.com because it is so easy to maintain the sites.

    Yes, wordpress has all the basics of SEO and such pretty much covered and they do a good job of it even if the blogger doesn’t do anything at all. It’s really hard to beat wordpress for ease of use and people really don’t have to worry about much past picking a theme, setting up their sidebar, and blogging.

    However, it still appears my site is NOT indexed with either yahoo or google.

    Then review the above. Blog more, or wait longer.
