WordPress.com-provided AuthInfo Code not usable by german provider

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi everybody, I need to transfer my domain to a german registrar and have received an AuthInfo Code from wordpress.com that is not compatible with my new german provider. The supplied code looks similar to this (altered!): D2A314,C4′)8^1B1.
This code contains characters that are NOT supported by german/european providers and thus my new provider says he can’t do the transfer…..
Is this code just a hash? how could it be made “plain text”????
I really need HELP here, QUICK!!!
    thanks,
    pat

Hi Pat. I’m sorry, that sounds very frustrating! I’ve contacted the team that handles our registrar issues to get assistance, as the codes aren’t something I can re-generate to try and get one without the characters in question. I’m very sorry for the inconvenience — we haven’t had this happen before. I understand not wanting to paste the authinfo code, but can you specify which character(s) the new registrar says they can’t handle?

    Hi jenmylo,
thanks for following up on this, and yes, it is really frustrating.
I have looked up the allowed characters for the AuthInfo code on http://www.denic.de which is the equivalent to http://www.internic.com and they show this list of characters for the AuthInfo Code:

“Die Länge der AuthInfo muss zwischen 8 und 16 Zeichen liegen. Erlaubte Zeichen sind:
    (allowed:)
    A, B, C, D, E‚ F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z

    a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z

    2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

    +, -, /, *

Nicht erlaubt sind die folgenden Zeichen, da sie in der Praxis am häufigsten verwechselt werden:
    (not allowed):
    I (capital I), l (lowercase l), O (capital O), o (lowercase o) und 0 (zero) und 1.

Or would complete cancellation of my domain help in any way? Like if I just re-registered it with my new provider?

A code that is usable by a german provider would be my fave option…

    Thanks,
    pat

    Thanks,

    Update:
I discovered that AuthInfo codes are supposed to be alphanumeric, meaning that there are either 36 (A-Z0-9, case insensitive) or 62 (A-Za-z0-9, case-sensitive) alphanumeric characters.
WHY THEN, does my code contain special characters such as ,(*)’????
No wonder my new provider can’t work with this code.
Could I please get a normal, plaintext code now???!!!

The codes are generated by GoDaddy, and these characters are absolutely typical. It looks like the code generated for you contains a 0, which is disallowed by the German registrar according to your previous note (not typical). I will contact GoDaddy to ask them to generate a new code for you that does not contain any of the characters included on the German registrar’s “not allowed” list.

I wouldn’t recommend canceling the domain to re-register, as there’s a grace period during which registrars don’t release a domain in case the owner wants to reclaim it, so you wouldn’t be able to try for it again for a couple of months.

As soon as I hear back from GoDaddy I’ll pass the info along to you.

    cool,
thank you! The main problem they are having with the supplied code are the special characters i.e.: *)(,’ that are within my AuthInfo code.
    Can’t wait to hear back!
    Thanks,
    pat

Hi Pat. I got a response from GoDaddy.

We are showing that the auth code was accepted and the domain is pending transfer away.

Given their response, you might want to contact the German company again to see what’s going on.

OK, cool, thanks a lot! I actually got a Domain Transfer confirmation yesterday, too. So it finally seems to be happening.
    Good.
