wordpress.com software updates, infrastructure details

    Hi there,

Are there any good articles around how wordpress.com team manages/upgrades wordpress software? What versions do they run, how often is it updated and how? etc.

In the past wordpress has been very transparent about their backend infrastructure, tools they use and servers. From what I’ve read it’s Debian-based and they use Nagios and other common Open Source tools across 3 x datacenters. This is great. Is there other articles or information anyone can share or point me to about:

    * Upgrade running versions of wordpress
    * Upgrade widgets offered
    * What version(s) are currently running

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Staff do all upgrades here on this WordPress.COM multi-user blogging platform. As we bloggers do nothing there is no reference material for us WordPress.COM bloggers.

Note that this platform is running the latest version 4.3. It is continually updated on a daily basis and the full upgrades are up and running here one month before they are made available to WordPress.ORG users.

re: plugin installation on wordpress.COM blogs
WordPress.com blogs cannot be equipped for eCommerce transactions unless they have the $299. per year annually renewable Business upgrade http://en.support.wordpress.com/ecommerce/

Regardless of upgrades be clear on the fact that blogger installed plugin capability does not exist on WordPress.COM blogs and there is no upgrade you can purchase here that changes that reality.

For that type of functionality you’d need a self-hosted WordPress.ORG software install running on a paid web hosting service.

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins (passwords), features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

You can hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting and move your content into a WordPress.ORG install https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-to-a-self-hosted-wordpress-site/

If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there.

Lastly, I have read your other threads https://en.forums.wordpress.com/profile/wwfoster and I think you may be unaware that the only relevant here http://support.wordpress.COM. The vast majority of information and tutorials you find on the internet applies only to wordpress.ORG software installs, not to WordPress.COM hosted blogs.

    re: Upgrade widgets offered
    There are none on offer.

Thanks for the response, yes I’m only talking about the wordpress.com hosted site. When I mention widgets I’m talking about the ones available to people hosting here e.g. twitter, flickr, etc that are available. How are those updated? I guess they are maintained in the same fashion?

Your information around platform upgrades for wordpress.com is informative and just what I am looking for. Very cool that the stable releases land here before they go to the community.
