WordPress.com – Traffic Spikes

We’re creating a site that will probably have a very small amount of traffic in general. However, the traffic may spike to high levels of 20,000 visitors per hour in certain rare instances.

Is WordPress.com a good hosting platform for these instances? Will the site slow down or shut down from too much traffic? What is the technology with the servers? Is it a shared hosting setup? I’m told that shared hosting can cause problems at times.

Has anyone here had experience with traffic spikes while their site was hosted by WordPress.com?

Thank you for your reply! However, I’m not referring to backups. I’m talking more about traffic spikes and the site going down from too much traffic. In fact, the link raises more concerns for me since it talks about the site could be back up in 2 days. We don’t want the site to go down during a traffic spike. I’ve been told to be careful of sharing hosting providers, and I would imagine that WordPress.com is using shared hosting to accommodate for all the blogs. Any idea of how their servers are setup when it comes to a site getting 10,000+ visitors per hour? If it’s not a problem, then why do they charge extra for the VIP hosting services?

Again, thanks for any help or feedback.

There’s no way your traffic peaks will be an issue and I tagged this thread for aStaff response.

    Hi there,

WordPress.com is definitely a good choice for high traffic sites; we don’t charge extra for bandwidth, we’re scalable, and our servers can handle high traffic peaks, no problem. We have a number of big sites on the VIP platform and these are all hosted with WordPress.com:

However you don’t need to sign up as a VIP. Our regular hosting is also fantastic for reliability, speed, and up-time.
