WordPress.com versus WordPress.org: help me decide

I have a hosted website. I could install WordPress there. (In fact, THEY could, FREE: it’s a perk of hosting.)

However, I’m no PHP expert. I know how to spell it. I’m more an HTML/CSS stylist. Is it my destiny to stay here with wordpress.com, or is an installed blog, hosted, easy enough to set up that I could style it without delving into a lot of PHP coding?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Typically, if you can find a theme that comes close to the features and basic structure you want, you can do all your customization via CSS and never have to dip into the PHP.

If your web host is like most, they probably have a one-button Fantastico installation where you answer a few questions and then it is installed for you automatically and I’ve never had any issues with the Fantastico installation scripts.

What you need to know though is that if anything goes wrong, you have to figure it out and fix it. You are also responsible for all upgrades, and backups, and I strongly suggest backups every week if you make a lot of posts.

Once installed, it isn’t that much different from the version used here so everything will be very familiar.

You will likely have to create a .htaccess file, and in some cases you might have to create a php.ini file as well to get around possible issues between your computer, wordpress and your web host’s servers. Information on all that is available over at http://wordpress.ORG , which is where the self-hosted version of wordpress is supported.
