wordpress.com vs .org
-
I have set-up a blog on WordPress.com. This will be used as a blog/website with static pages. I would like the following features:
• a general email account where people can contact me
• a calendar of events
• a private place where group members can post without showing the thread to the world
• a public blog where we could post and receive input from everyone who would like to add comments
• occassional sales of event related waresCan I do these things on the free version or do I need a hosted version?

You will need a hosted version for the private zone, unless you simply use draft posts. Event calendars can be linked to here, but not featured in sidebars directly. Email accounts are not a WordPress.com issue; if you buy the domain upgrade, however, and use Gmail, you can get what appears to be (email visible only to moderators and staff) easily enough; instructions are in the FAQ. Everything else should be pretty straightforward, presuming you’ve read the FAQ about Business Blogs.

It’s even simpler than drafts, I’m using private posts (visible only to logged in blog members) on wp.com to show off ideas to my lads. If you get every author to post them in a consistent category you have basically a private zone.
