WordPress.com vs WordPress.org

I am new to all of this. I want to build a website/blog that has static pages for content, and a blog on different subjects. I have my own domain parked at godaddy. I would like to use my own domain name. I would like it to look more like a website than a blog if possible. Will WordPress.com or WordPress.org with a host best meet my needs. Bear in mind, I have no technical experience in this.

There’s a sticky about the differences between the two. If it doesn’t answer your questions, just holler:

How much more difficult is it to set up and manage a WordPress.org site on a host vs WordPress.com site which seems to make everything easy?

I am setting up a new blog site too for business people to meet and discuss various topics. I think I will use the word press MU, but I do not know if they have a plug in to allow private contact between users if they want. Does anyone know about that?

@pohaver – It’s not necessarily a matter of difficulty, although everyone’s learning curve is different. After the matter of expense, it’s a matter of maintenance. You’re responsible for everything. If something goes wrong, it’s your problem. If your server goes down, so does your site and that’s your problem too. Also, some of the functions built in here (ie: stats) require a plug in there.

OTOH, a self-hosted blog enables you to use javascript, flash, iframes and forms, which are stripped out here for security reasons. You’re free to have ads…or to keep your blog ad-free.

I took my primary blog self-hosted in January for the extra functionality and ad-free aspects, but I’ve also had every problem I listed. HTH
