wordpress.com vs wordpress.org themes
-
I downloaded a wordpress.com theme – Boardwalk – and activated it on a wordpress install on my server. I don’t understand how this theme differs from a wordpress.org theme. Are the .com themes just less configurable?

We do not provide support for WordPress.ORG theme versions here at WordPress.COM. WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there.

I understand the difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com. I’m curious as to the specific differences between the org vs com themes.

WordPress.com themes are designed specifically for WordPress.com sites, and cannot be used on any other platform. There are no allowances for java, flash or script… all such code is stripped out for security reasons. The underlying construction of themes cannot be altered, only a limited amount of custom changes – fonts style and colors, custom backgrounds, etc. – can be made with using CSS with a purchased upgrade.
WordPress.com themes do not allow for third party widgets, only those available from your site dashboard can be added to sidebars and footers.
