  Is WordPress identification of any kind required to appear on my WordPress.com website footer or other areas?

  Yes, we are not allowed to hide the footer credits here at WordPress.com. You can style it differently and make it a little less obvious if you wish (not going overboard as that could be seen as hiding it) and you can even add to the footer credits, if you have the Custom Design upgrade such as if you wanted to add a copyright or something.
