WordPress.COM widgets vs .ORG widgets

I’ve been trying to figure this out for weeks. All the 3rd party widgets that I see and find links to, do these only work with .ORG wordpresses? As in, are the sidebar widgets the only ones available to .COM users? I keep finding widgets and finally someone gave specific install instructions with a screenshot, and I could see my Dashboard was different (…presentation, users…. vs …presentation, plugins, users…).

    Does that make sense?

I apologize if this question has been answered, I’ve looked at the FAQs and Support forum, but the “search” feature i either can’t find or it gives me 5 results.

Yes, there is a difference between .com and .org
This wordpress.com hosting is a bit different than what is available at .org. At wordpress.org you can download the wordpress files to use on your own hosted server. From there, if you know how to FTP, you can upload wordpress and install any theme or plugins that you want. With wordpress.com you don’t have to worry about that, but things are a little different. Some ways in which it is different here are that signing up for an account has you registered to comment on any blog that ends in wordpress.com as oppoded to registering at a self-hosted blog which means you can comment there alone. Another difference is that you can only use the plugins that are available here, but there are many ways to circumvent that by using alternate services, etc. No need to apologize, asking is how we learn. A great resource is the official wordpress.com blog, wordpress.com/blog and lorelle.wordpress.com Anything else, be sure to ask.

    (1) WordPress.com and wordpress.org run on different software. And at the head of the forum is a post entitled “please read me first before posting”. It contains a description of the differences in services between those available from wordpress.com and wordpress.org https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=3700&replies=1

    (2) Both types of blogs ie. wordpress.com blogs and wordpress.org blogs have widgets. However, there are a variety of widgets at wordpress.com that are coded only for wordpress.com which is a shared wp MU multi-user blogging platform. These widgets are not available on wordpress.org blogs.

I believe I have read that post (“read me first”) before, but the answer I was looking for was not painfully obvious to me. I have also visited lorelle’s website, etc. In fact, lorelle was the first person that hipped me to all the 3rd party widgets. :-D

I suppose I just never found a “straight answer” so I appreciate both of you taking time to answer my question. I can now close many tabs in my browser ;-)

    newhossier,

The themes on WordPress.com come with certain widgets and plugins automatically installed. When you use WordPress.org stand alone software on a regular domain, you have to upload and configure all those special pieces of code yourself. More work but more options.

    Look here
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins

    and here…
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins/WordPress_Widgets

…to start with. I’m sure there are other places as well. Also, users create and share their own widgets and plugins, so just search for what you want.

    Hope that helps.

No one else has posted to this thread since February and as the plugins are only coded for wordpress.org blogs I hope your posting about this here does not confuse wordpress.com bloggers. The correct forum for wordpress.org bloggers to use is at http://wordpress.org/support
