WordPress.com windows app freezes when importing photos
-
After selecting add media in a post and then add new within the media library and selecting a file, the app briefly shows the import screen before blacking out. This happens every time I try to add media regardless of whether it is 1 photo or many. The only way to recover the app is through Task Manager. I’m using the latest version 1.3.1 on Windows 10. Can anyone advise a few. Thanks

Hi @m0untainh1ker, what happens exactly when it blacks out? Do you get any errors, or does the screen go blank, or does it hang? How do you get out of the black out? I’ll be trying to duplicate this on my Windows 10 virtual machine, but any more information you can send will be helpful. Thanks!

Hi supernovia after selecting the photos you briefly see the upload screen (less than second) that has the progress bars in t and then app flickers and goes black. The menu along the top still respond to clicks but nothing excites. The only way to recover is to end task in task manager. This happens whether I upload one photo or many and happens every time. As a work around I need to use a browser and add through media. When it black screens there are no errors

Make sure the app is not full screen, then try again. And let me know then whether the entire screen goes black or just the app window. Also, when you say it “goes black” I’m imagining the app window is blank and black with nothing else in it. If that isn’t the case, can you get a screenshot?
Lastly, can you try it with different photos? I’m not sure about Windows but in a few cases on Mac, I have seen certain photos break the Mac preview. Different photos work fine. I haven’t figured out why that is yet, but this could be a similar issue.

Hi supernovia, the app is not in full screen when this happens, you are right that the app screen goes black, nothing else on it. The rest of the pc and open apps work fine. I would have attempted up load 15 photos at different times and into different posts. I don’t recall if it work successfully prior to the upgrade of 1.3.1 thanks for your help

I still haven’t been able to duplicate this.
Does it happen even if the image is small?
Do you have other programs running that could be interfering? I’m using a fresh copy of Windows 10 on a virtual machine – I’ve only installed the Desktop app.

Hi Supernovia, I have been able to get the app to import 1, 4 and 6 photos at a time. I have been able to do two imports of up to six photos before the screen will go black on the third import. After that I have to kill the app in task manager. I can then restart the app and work on my post, but any further attempt to import regardless of the number of photos will cause the screen to go black. I have to restart the computer for the import function to work again. I thought it may be Picasa that was causing it but if failed even with out Picasa active. I’m at a loss to why it is happening. Last night I tried to rearrange two slides already in the post and that was enough to cause if black screen. I can use the media function through the web and import as many photos as i like and never experience a failure

It does seems to matter in regard to the size of the image, even images from different cameras does not make a difference

@m0untainh1ker, thanks. So I understand that once you get this error, even if you close the app completely, you won’t be able to upload photos again at all til after you restart. And then you can upload so many photos again before it dies on you again — and then even if you restart the app you still can’t add images, though you can do other tasks in the app. Is that right?
I still haven’t been able to duplicate this but I might try adding more photos here. Also, are you able to close all other programs first to see whether that makes a difference? If it does, one of them maybe conflicting and we may be able to figure it out. Sorry these can be really tricky to figure out if we can’t duplicate it here, especially if it’s intermittent on your side, too. But I’d be happy to keep at it :)

I have uninstalled all unused software (mainly shareware) and restarted my machine. I have been able upload six photos at a time. If I try eight it black screens. I haven’t had to restart though to kick off uploading photos again. I did all this with all other applications closed. So workable but not ideal.

@m0untainh1ker, so with other programs open, you have to restart. But without the other programs open do you just close the app and open it again?
Also it’s consistently reproducible with more than 6 photos uploaded at once, regardless of their size, correct?
