WordPress.com XML site import not processing properly?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m trying to import a WordPress.com website (fuentefiltros.wordpress.com) to another WordPress.com website (fuentefiltros2.wordpress.com) because I need to separate “ownership” of the former website from another account, and in order to do so I need to create an entirely different account.

With that said, yesterday, within the new website (fuentefiltros2.wordpress.com) I navigated to Tools → Import → WordPress, and then I uploaded the .xml file that I exported from the other website (fuentefiltros.wordpress.com). I was then presented with the following message:

“Estamos procesando tu importación ahora y te enviaremos un correo electrónico cuando esté todo hecho. Si no lo hacemos en 24 horas, por favor contacta a soporte, y tendremos todo arreglado.”

…which translates to “We are processing your import now and we will send you an e-mail when it’s all done. If we don’t in 24 hours, please contact support and we’ll fix everything.”

However, 24 have passed and I still haven’t been notified that the website has been imported successfully. What’s going on?

    Thanks in advance,

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Not to worry. There’s a queue and I’ll tag this thread for a Staff followup and they can reset the importer for you.

  • Hi there!

I’ve gone ahead and did the import for you. Can you kindly check your site if everything is in order?

    Thanks!

Not everything was in order, but at least all the structure and content has transferred over properly. I noticed that nothing from the widgets transferred over, but I’ll just manually fix that. Thanks for your help.

I’m just chiming in to to say that themes and widgets cannot be exported and imported between wordpress.org and wordpress.com blogs. Please be clear about that. Also note that WordPress.com blogs have an abundance of in-house widgets not included in WordPress.org installs. See here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/category/widgets-sidebars/

  • Echoing what timethief said, the export file contains only your posts and pages, and doesn’t include your blog’s settings, themes or widgets. You would have to set those up again. Thanks!

Alright, but just to be clear, this transfer was not from WordPress.org to WordPress.com but rather between a WordPress.com blog to another WordPress.com blog.

Furthermore, now that I already deleted all the content from the other blog I realize that there existed the option this entire time to simply transfer the blog to the new user. So, in order to not lose the original blog addresses (http://fuentefiltros.wordpress.com) which is ultimately what I want, before I permanently deleted the other address I transferred what remained of the old blog (which is really just the blog address) to the new user.

With that said, here is the summary of my remaining issue:

I have the following two blogs under one username:

    http://fuentefiltros.wordpress.com (which has no content)
http://fuentefiltros2.wordpress.com (with all the correct content and widgets already set up)

My question is this: How can I “merge” the two blogs in the most efficient method possible so that the final result is as follows:

http://fuentefiltros.wordpress.com (with all the correct content and widgets already set up)
    http://fuentefiltros2.wordpress.com (permanently deleted)

    Does this make sense?

To “merge” the two blogs, you would have to re-export the contents of “fuentefiltros2.wordpress.com” and import them back to “fuentefiltros.wordpress.com”. After importing successfully and setting up “fuentefiltros.wordpress.com”, you may safely delete “fuentefiltros2.wordpress.com” afterwards.

You may also set the latter as private in case you’d like to keep it for future use.

Let me know if there’s anything else I can do to help. Thank you!

    Yes, this makes sense.

Too bad I didn’t realize before that there was a much easier way to transfer the previous blog to another user so I wouldn’ve had to perform the export-import and readjustment of widgets and everything only one time.

    Thanks for expertise.

  • No problem, Nico. Happy blogging!
