WordPress.com/org?
-
Hello there, I have a website created by a web designer, I am tied into a monthly payment for this and still do not own the content. I would like to build my own wordpress site.
I need to start something straight away and have begun creating in wordpress.com. However, on further reading I understand that to apply the plugins I need for my business I need a wordpress.org account.
My question is, If I continue to build a basic site in wordpress.com, is it transferable to wordpress.org? I would like to know if I can continue to build a basic site safe in the knowledge that after some reading and some advice I can then easily transfer content to wordpress.org?
Or if it is not easily transferable, should I wait, do some further reading and start building in wordpress.org?
Thank you for your advice,
David

It depends what you are expecting to transfer. You can’t transfer the whole look of the site such as themes, widgets, menus etc. You can only transfer the content you have written on posts and pages. Saying that, sometimes it is useful to have a trial run with something here on WordPress.com (you can set the site to “private”) as it gives you a starting point that you can look at to help you set up a WordPress.org site (which will most likely be necessary for you if you need your own plugins).

Thanks for responding. It would be any of the navigation I had set up that I would be looking to transfer. Is it simple to create a basic site in .org to get going or are you starting from scratch and need knowledge of coding straight away?

I prefer WordPress.com as it is a turnkey solution, but then I’m not trying to use it to run a business. I can’t recommend any particular host but just to give you an example of the sort of thing you can expect:-

(I don’t know what country you are in but if you view the above link there is a box to change that if necessary).

To set up a wordpress site on your webhost should be pretty simple. Most webhosting companies have a one-click install for WordPress.
There are a lot of themes available in the wordpress admin, or you may install a new one from a paid provider.
Both wordpress.com and wordpress.org is very user friendly.
