wordpress.org migration

I’m getting ready to migrate a wordpress.com blog that already has a custom domain to a self hosted wordpress.org blog. I’ll be exporting all the content from wordpress.com and importing it to the new blog. I’ll be setting up the link structure so it matches the current blog.

With all the links being the same, and the feed url being the same, is it necessary to purchase the redirect upgrade?

Hi. If you have a custom domain name and will be using the same one for your self-hosted blog, any user going to that custom domain name address will be directed to your new blog, provided the link structure (example: blog.com/2011/01/01/blog-post/) is the same. I suggest you ask at http://wordpress.org/support for more information

What will stop working is your old __.wordpress.com address and that would require a site redirect upgrade indeed for visitors to be seamlessly redirected. Otherwise, a simple notice saying “I have moved to http://…” would suffice at no extra charge.

Ok. so if the custom domain was purchased right after the blog was started, before anything was posted, and if I set up the link structure to match the current link structure, I should be good to go?

If you don’t mind the fact that anyone that would happen to use the old __.wordpress.com, the answer is yes.
