WordPress.org vs CSS upgrade

    Hi all,

I’m wondering what the pros and cons are of buying a domain and using WordPress.org software to create my site, vs just altering the css code of a template using WordPress.com?

Thanks for any advice you can give,

What are your CSS editing skills?

Buying a domain, note, is completely different from hosting somewhere off WordPress.com with a site running software from WordPress.org. Buying a domain doesn’t mean your site is WordPress.org.

I intend to learn HTML and CSS. Basically I want to build a website to host my photography, CV, and maybe incorporate some sort of blogging element (although I’m not sure about this).

I don’t know whether it’s better to buy a domain and build from scratch (using Dreamweaver), or buy a site name and use WordPress.org to create the site. Does that make sense?

Please read this article to better understand the difference between running a self-hosted version of the WordPress software and hosting your site on WordPress.com http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

One other thing you should know about WordPress.com is that it is upgraded on a daily basis (sometimes several times a day) with new features and tweaks to old ones. Things can and do go pear-shaped from time to time. Just an FYI.

Yes I’ve read that, I’m asking about the difference between buying a domain and building from scratch vs using WordPress.org – not about WordPress.com.

I was answering your original question:

As rain said above, buying a domain does not mean you automatically have a website. It only means you have an address on the internet.

If you want a website, you can host it here on WordPress.com and buy the upgrades to alter an existing template and map your domain to your site.

Alternately you can buy 3rd party hosting and run some kind of software (WordPress or otherwise) or, if you have coding skills and/or the appropriate site builder software, build your site from scratch.

Besides the level of costs involved in the two options, about the other differences between running your site on WordPress.com and using WordPress.org, they’re pretty much covered in the Support doc I pointed you to. We don’t really have information about the “building from scratch” option. Maybe a question in a more generalized webhosting forum will give you a better answer.

Sorry for my snappy tone. Yes, I see what you mean.

I’m not sure which option suits me best. I have a clear vision of what I want my site to look like, and it’s relatively low key – not really a ‘blog’ as much as a static site with images, a bit like the following page: http://www.nuribilgeceylan.com/photography/turkeycinemascope1.php?sid=1

Whether or not I can do this type of thing in WordPress.com/.org I don’t know.

There are quite a lot of photography sites here on WordPress.com. Probably the best way to browse them is either through the various Theme Showcase “Who’s using XXX” links http://theme.wordpress.com/ and/or the photography tag http://en.wordpress.com/tag/photography/ That way you can get a feel for what other photographers are doing here.

Also, dynamic updated content outranks static content any day. So keep that in mind whatever approach you choose to go.
