Oh yes – and instead of just waiting to see if this was fixed you have now let everyone know so until we fix it the tags will be gamed and gamed and gamed. Thanks.
-
I’m sorry Mark I havent recieved and email back from anyone so I didnt know if you guys were on top of it or not.
-
Why?
Tag pollution is a valid issue actually. Mark’s said many times that he comes across blogs that have hundreds of tags in every post. Heck, I’ve done it sometimes although I at least use tags that relate to what is actually contained within the post. For example in this post. I’ve got a list of tags yet you don’t see my using the “KP video” tag in there. I at least try to make them relate to what’s in there.
-
Of course tag pollution is a problem. My feelings on it are well known and I even addressed it myself as my pet peeve in this thread without including links and “how to instructions”. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=7152&page=2&replies=74#post-47016 However, I do believe that Mark will see to it that staff action to prevent it from becoming a widespread abuse will be taken. In the meanwhile I think it would better serve the common good if the posts explaining “how to game the system” were closed while staff come up with a remedy.
It’s my position that community building takes place through developing positive relationships between individuals be they bloggers or staff. And I believe closing the thread would be more likely to lend itself to community building than keep the thread going would.
At the very least I think it would provide a cooling off period during which time the bloggers who have been doing this could reconsider their actions and change their ways. If so then the probability of developing a longterm animosity would be reduced and this in turn would be a benefit to the wordpress bloggers who want to be a part of building a healthy wordpress.com blogging community.
-
I agree with what you are saying timethief and I applaud all the work you do around here. I never intended to create a mess, “geesh” what a mess.
Well I have no need to explain my actions for doing so, you understand because you laid it on the line on my blog about the matter.
You hit the head of the nail so to say.
Anyway thanks for what you guys do over here.

If the problem is with “TAG ABUSE”….it’s kinda funny that THE CRITIC tagged the rant about me, with no less than EIGHTY-SEVEN “tags”. I would think that would be considered “ABUSE”. At least when I put my posts up, the tags are relevant to the post.
IN CASE ANYONE IS INTERESTED IN THE “CRITIC”s ABUSE, SEE THE TAGS BELOW, SHE ONLY HAS A HANDFUL POSTED TODAY, BUT YESTERDAY THESE WERE THE TAGS ON
HER SLANDER OF ME.This entry was posted on Sunday, February 4th, 2007 at 8:40 pm and is filed under Uncategorized, TECHNOLOGY, MUSIC, GAMES, INTERNET, PERSONAL, SPORTS, BLOGGING, NEWS, INSPIRATION, RELIGION, LIFE, SCHOOL, WORK, SCIENCE, ART, BOOKS, BUSINESS, ENVIRONMENT, MOVIES, RELATIONSHIPS, TRAVEL, FUN, LIFESTYLE, MEDIA, REVIEWS, HEALTH, WRITING, HUMOR, ENTERTAINMENT, POLITICS, HOME, FAMILY, VIDEO, POETRY, POEMS, PHOTOGRAPHY, BLOGS, TV, ANIMALS, SEX, FILM, THOUGHTS, SOFTWARE, FOOD, WOMEN, SOCIETY, MICROSOFT, ECONOMICS, PEOPLE, FRIENDS, HISTORY, CELEBRITIES, CULTURE, NATURE, FOOTBALL, BASEBALL, COMPUTERS, ENERGY, EDUCATION, CHILDREN, MONEY, READING, SHOPPING, PHILOSOPHY, BASKETBALL, HOCKEY, LAW, GOVERNMENT, HUMAN RIGHTS, REPUBLICANS, FASHION, LOVE, CRIME, WAR, MEN, DEMOCRATS, MARRIAGE, PARENTING, COOKING, YOUTUBE, ACTIVISM, GOD, DIET, BIBLE, GLOBAL WARMING. ————————-People should know the TRUTH about this so-called “CRITIC”. I wonder if the WORDPRESS.COM people think this type of “personal atttack” on another blogger is acceptable???
It seems she is trying to “promote” her own site, by attacking me.
-
If someone knows different, the tags cannot be exploited like that.
If you think they can, then act responsibly and sent in a Support BEFORE blogging it OR posting here.Catherine – I had pointed that out on that post made by blogcritic.
-
Actually I just took a look at the original poster’s blog. I think it’s funny that nearly every link within the blog is a Open in New Window link, even internal links. Most bloggers know that that is like one of the worst thing to do on a blog. We’ve talked about it here many, many times. Anyone with “20 years” of experience on the net would also know that that breaks accessability guidelines as well.
Mark, we’ve had a request to close this thread. I was leaning it keep it open as we were discussing a known issue around here. Timethief, tag pollution is a known issue and it’s not really a security issue so I’m fine with it here. I’ll leave it up to Mark and staff if they want to close it.
Me? I’m still trying to figure out how to download than dang video. :)

Just reread the ToS yet again on another note and found this nifty line:
You must not describe or assign keywords to your blog in a misleading or unlawful manner, including in a manner intended to trade on the name or reputation of others, and Automattic may change or remove any description or keyword that it considers inappropriate or unlawful, or otherwise likely to cause Automattic liability.
I’d take that to mean tag pollution.
-
I think it is legitimate to discuss tag-spamming.
I think that catherinemorgan has a valid point also.
But the conversation should steer away from the personal and toward a community view.
-
Thank you Mark, I think it would be helpful to know what is acceptable, and what is not, as far as “re-posting” to a catagory. This issue has been focused on me as an “abuser” of this system, when I had no idea I was doing anything wrong. So a detailed list of what is and what is not acceptable would be helpful to me.
However, I would like to say, that I think what this “unknown critic” did to me, should be at the top of any list of WHAT NOT TO DO. This person knew what they were doing was wrong and hurtful, but continued. Even with this post, on this forum….It seems a clear way for this “critic” to “self-promote”. By “scandalizing” me…..this “critic” has got a lot of trafic to their post. That does not seem right to me.
Thank you for your help with this.

Hindsight frequently identifies other courses of action we could have taken but it does not erase the truth – something must be done. You have spoken your truth on your blog and in the forum as did others. With the exception of one sniper, we have done so without malicious intent. We have offered to become part of the solution here at wordpress, rather than to act like cowardly aiders and abettors, gamers or the single smart-ass sideline sniper who posted to both your blog and mine.
We’re always in an uncomfortable position when we choose to speak our truth and expose abusers and flaws in the system that create a temptation for those who lack integrity. We all know it’s far easier to turn a blind eye to abuse than to speak up and put one’s self on the firing line, so to speak. But when we know in our hearts that unless a situation of abuse is addressed and a remedy found for it, the abuse will continue and even escalate then we have to make a value judgment.
We can choose to:
(1) speak our truth and be counted among those who want to remedy the problem;
(2) or to pretend it doesn’t matter when it does;
(3) or join the abusers and game the system too;
(4) or even stand on the sidelines and maliciously snipe at those who are aimed at finding a solution.And, in this matter, like all other uncomfortable situations in life, the choices we make mirror the way we choose to address life, either as full participants or cowards, as gamers or as sideline snipers. Thus, the comments I am receiving on a completely unrelated blog post on my blog assist me to assess where people are coming from and whether or not I wish to be in close company with them or not.
What will be will be and I have no doubt that staff will come forward with a solution in the very near future. I asked for a closure of this thread guesstimating that it would promote further dialogue and reasoned non-personal discussion. It has done so and I’m glad of that so I’m withdrawing that request.
Best regards to all wordpress bloggers who are focused on contributing to a solution.

Let’s just agree that whatever anyone’s intentions in the past (and really how can we or even they themselves know all about the motives behind an action) we are ALL NOW AWARE that the behaviours discussed in this flamewar are unacceptable and may, as Dr. Mike points out, be a TOS violation putting one’s blog at risk. In future, whatever your motivations, do not behave this way.
Agreed?
-
I don’t think there is a “flamewar” going on here at all. Only one person here has chosen to focus on blog traffic by articulating this:
“By “scandalizing” me…..this “critic” has got a lot of trafic to their post. That does not seem right to me.”Remarkably that person did so immediately after stating she didn’t know any better but, without expressing regret or promising to stop. The facts point out that the blogger in question did benefit greatly by choosing to game the system and that her inner “radar” did not steer her away from using this advantage to increase traffic to her own blog.
I’m simply deleting any comments that are not directly related to my blog posts.
-
Actually I was saying that tag pollution may be a ToS violation.
Flame wars I leave to staff. :)

@drmike
You have said:… every link within the blog is a Open in New Window link, even internal links. Most bloggers know that that is like one of the worst thing to do on a blog. We’ve talked about it here many, many times.
Could you please clarify exactly what you mean by this “open in a new window link” and why it’s a wrong thing to do?
-
Oh, I know flamewars are not a TOS violation. What I meant was that tag pollution may well be.
And I’ve seen some of the statements. Some people are behaving better than others, but what you have here is the dynamic of a flamewar, even if the language is more restrained. I meant it in the larger Online Spat sense.
