    @rain

    I meant it in the larger Online Spat sense.

    Ahhh … I think I see the bigger picture coming into focus now.

    @drmike
    Will you please explain the “open in a new window link” point?

  • Unknown's avatar

    TT – there are a number of ways to handle outgoing links from a blog. You can give a target="_blank" (i hate to use the word!) tag and it will force the browser to open a new window (not tab (unless you’re in Opera)).

    This is generally considered to be bad form on the part of the person placing the URL (not just bloggers). The decision how to open a URL should be left to the user, not the placer.

    If you want to be strict about it, the “target=” is depracated under W3 standards and will break any validation test that’s currently available from W3.

    I’m not going to comment on the tags thing as it is none of my business!

    @cornell
    (1) Thanks for the explanation. I think I get it but I’ve never even touched the target=”_blank” thingee. Have I been doing wrong?

    (2) I’m puzzled by your final statement. We are all part of the same blogging community here at wordpress.com, so how could this tagging conundrum amount to being none of your business? It seems to me that it’s every wordpress bloggers business. So is that a cop-out that I’m hearing? Gee, I sure hope not.

    This isn’t a battle of wills or a flamewar going on here: it’s a plea to the staff for changes to be made.

  • Unknown's avatar

    1. No, nothing wrong, leave it alone. Let the reader decide how they want to open links! ;)

    2. I haven’t blogged on wp.com since (I think) November, I never use the tag surfer and while I absolutely agree with the “pollution” or “gaming” that others cite, it doesn’t involve me. I also agree that something needs to be done about it. In the very first reply Mark said that the team (or at least, he) is aware of the problem. This suggests to me that they are looking for ways to solve the problem. AKA, yes, it’s a cop-out! ;)

    When I say I haven’t blogged here, I lie. I deleted one blog and deleted all the posts from another blog at the weekend!

    ——————–

    Your correct about the option should be left up to the user. My main reason for making sure external links open in a new window is because as a general rule I use a lot of external links and I don’t want to loose a new user because they just got sent off to another site and cant find mine again. Heck many don’t even know how to use the back option in their browser.

    I do this because there are so many users that still do not know how to click on a link and open it in a new window. They simply click and are gone.

    As far as the New W3 Standards I don’t worry about them to much yet. So far its not effecting very much if anything in site rankings etc. and I’ve seen no sign of Google or anyone else penalizing anyone for it. I could be wrong and would be the first to admit it if I saw it was being enforced so to say.

    Anyway that was a very good explanation Cornell and I’m not getting in on this subject either lol.

    Oops, your last post came while I was typing so I didn’t see it Cornell.

    @ timethief — At the risk of “being taken out by you, with one lethal swat”, as you stated you would do in your comment @ me, on the “critic” site last night. I feel I am well within my right to defend my character, this isn’t and has never been just about my blogs or my posts, you and this “critic” person have made it into a total character assassination.

    Since in the past when I had posted on this forum a question, you seemed to be a kind person (I assumed who was working in some capacity with WordPress), so I was shocked to see this comment directed @ me…..especially after I came to you with this problem, asking what I should do.

    You not only chose to respond by posting this comment directly to this “critic” site, but you did not respond to me at all. Even though you imply in your comment that you have informed me of this problem via e-mail in the past. The only other contact I had with you, other than on this forum, was a “nice” comment you left on my site about a post on “forgiveness” that I had written.

    So, you can imagine my shock when I saw this posted as a comment on a site that seemed to have the sole purpose of attacking me.

    this is what you said……

    @Catherine,

    I have already made it clear to you by way of email that I stand with the Blog Critic on this one. Having given you that advantage I will now share my position publicly.

    It is shameful that you have been caught “gaming” the wordpress.com category/tag page system. Gaming the system to put your own posts on top was not an act of kindness towards the other bloggers and no amount of sugar-coated schlock can hide the fact from any sane and balanced mind.

    The unethical re-publication of posts to guarantee yours are always on top of the wordpress.com category tag pages can quickly render you a bottom of the barrel person at wordpress.com. And your noteriety is bound to spread like cancer, unless you stop.

    More shameful still is that in response to being apprehended as a bad actor, rather than expressing remorse you have had the audacity to do a phony little kindness dance here on this blog, and expect us to applaud your abuse of the system and of your fellow bloggers – your abuse of us – your victims.

    One doesn’t have to be a psychologist to recognize the kind of behaviour you have manifested, as well as, your unrepentant attitude are textbook symptoms of a passive aggressive manipulation disorder triggered by competitiveness and clothed in self-deception.

    You need immediate treatment for what ails you Catherine. You need counseling to address and treat your addiction to acting like a phony baloney victim, when in fact you are a clever and cunning abuser.

    Please stop the behavior and stop kidding yourself about your motivation. Your competitiveness is unhealthy and your remonstrations ring hollow.

    Stop being a little fox who spoils the grapes before a lioness is forced to take you out with one lethal swat.

    Timethief

    @ Timethief — This is not only a character assassination, but sounds like a threat directed towards me as well. All you had to do was post a comment on my page explaining that what I was doing was against the “rules” of WordPress, and I would have stopped. I don’t even know what you mean by “gaming”, and I certainly should not be accused of being “unethical” or “shameful”, since up until I accidently saw a post “about me”….I had no idea that anything I was doing was wrong. I thought you were a professional? I thought you were on this forum to be helpful?

    To WordPress: I am still not sure what exactly I did wrong, I know it had something to do with “re-posting”. I would really appreciate a more clear instruction as to when you can “re-post” and when you can’t? As well as information on how many catagories you are allowd to tag one post, and if it is o.k. to change catagories?

    Out of respect for me, I would appreciate if the answer to my questions came from someone other than “timethief”, since it seems very clear from her comments, that she really doesn’t want to “help” me.

    I do want to eventually get the answers to my questions for the purpose of helping me not make similar mistakes in the future. Thank you.

    Using the target=”_blank” thing is bad? I only use it for two sites that I link to because they disabled the back feature and I want my visitors to be able to come back to my site. Found a third site this week on my blogroll that also disabled the back feature. I also use the tag when I link to videos because in case a person has dial-up, then they can keep that new window open to wait until the video loads and still be able to roam my site. I don’t do this with every link because it’s time consuming. I only do it with videos and those three sites that disabled the back feature. As for this tag war, I have no idea what any of you are talking about since I don’t do tags. :) Carry on.

    The issue of tags had been on our list of things to do for some time. The original post in this thread caused our action today. It had nothing to do with catherinemorgan (if you would like to contact me in Support we can discuss things there if you wish).

    The following information is for anyone/everyone:
    Blog posts seen on the main Tags pages should appear in the order from which they are published.
    So a blog post right now will appear under a post with the same tag made in 10 minutes for instance.

    You can tag as much as you like but over-tagging could get you penalised just as it could if someone reports you for tag spamming. As for what constitutes tag spamming – common sense would hopefully prevail.

    Re-posting and or changing tags is a bad idea.

    The ‘Featured blog’ still needs some work in some cases. Give us some time to get round to that :)

    Thank you for the clarity Mark. I have a further question to ask: Is it possible for the wordpress programming to be adjusted to recognizing only a fixed number of categories given to a post when it comes to placing them on the wordpress tag pages?

  • Unknown's avatar

    TT – that would fix a target :)

    Hey wordpress admin – whoever you may be. As it is hard to discern; since so many here seem to want your job so badly, it hurts them. But anyway I digress. I’m glad you are taking care of the issues. I really am. I just wish you could do something about cyber-bullying, as well. Thanks for your time. And avid fan of WordPress who has been blogging for almost 6 years. I’ve been around long enough to see through half of this BS. And that’s what it is BC.

    Cheers
    Joshua
