Hi there. The bgcolor attribute is for the background of an entire document and is no longer supported in html5, according to W3schools: http://www.w3schools.com/tags/att_body_bgcolor.asp
Rather use the html tag for highlighting. You can copy this code into the text editor to see how it will look.
Testing out how to <mark>highlight</mark> specific words in a <mark style="background: lightgreen;">sentence</mark> to make them stand out.If you use the mark-tag on its own it will highlight in yellow. Add the style-background attribute to change the colour of the highlight.
Note you can also change the colour of the text itself with the third button in the second row of the visual editor toolbar.

Hang on. I just updated the post I was using to test this and I see the software strips out the mark-tag. Use the span-tag instead, as shown here:
Testing out how to <span style="background: yellow;">highlight</span> specific words in a <span style="background: lightgreen;">sentence to make</span> them stand out.Keep in mind that depending on your theme’s background and font colour you might have to play around a bit with the highlight colours to make it look right (and possible have to change the font colour as well as explained above), and if you change themes at a later stage you’ll have to check your highlights on old posts as well.
