Working in text editor

    The line looks like:
    <span style=’text-decoration:underline;’><p id=’April-2014′>April</p></span> Top
    in the editor.
In the preview, April 2014 and Top should be on the same line. They are not. April 2014 is one one line and Top is below it. How can they both be on the same line? The April 2014 is underlined and is the target of a link at the top of the page.

The Top link above did not show up right, it should say:
    Top

without the quotes. It changed it somehow when the question was posted.

  • Unknown's avatar

The above is wrong too. It should say
    <a href
    =
    #top”>
    Top

as one line. It changes it for some reason.

  • Unknown's avatar

Again, it is changing it. After the word Top above, there should be a less than sign, then a forward slash, then an a, then a greater than sign. The idea is to close the tag.

You have a close paragraph sign after April. Thst is making the following word go to the next line. Put your paragraph takes on the outside and the span within.

    Try this:
    <p id="April 2014"><span style='text-decoration:underline;'>April</span> Top</p>

Paragraph tags that should say, not “takes”

This appears to work but with a slight modification. Hopefully the code will show correctly here. Here is what was typed:
    <p id="April-2014"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">April</span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="#top">Top</a></p>

The <p id="April-2014'> identifies the paragraph.
The <span style="text-decoration:underline;">April</span> puts the word April and underlines it.
    The &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp puts four spaces.
The <a href="#top">Top</a></p> is a reference to going to the top of the page and closes the paragraph.

It all seems to work. Thank you for the idea.

The 4 &nbsp seems inefficient. Is there a better way to put four, or how ever many, spaces?

Note: If the code above did not show right, there will a posting after this to clarify. Hopefully the use of will have made it show here right.

The code did not quite show right above. There are four & n b s p ‘ s in the space in the first bit of code above between the span part and the part about Top. It just put the spaces above and did not show the & n b s p ‘ s. Hopefully the idea is clear.

I I did not realize that your “top” was to be a link back up to the top of the page. I did understand that April was the ID to link down to, but even the word “top” didn’t alert me you were trying to make the return trip. LOL I’m used to being more alert than that.

Glad you got it all worked out.

On my iPad the viewing area for your page is narrow enough that right- aligning the word “top” would work, but I don’t have a larger screen to test it on to see if it would work there.

The use of right align moved everything over because it is a single paragraph. One solution was to put spaces in the visual input area. This is how most everything else on that page was spaced. The problem is it is difficult to line things up and it means doing some of the code in the text input area and then adding the spaces in the visual area. This can cause some difficulty and is a little cumbersome. After checking online, a more elegant solution to the four & n b s p ‘ s could not be found. They look inefficient, but since the line of code they are in is cut and past, with just the months/years changing, it seems the best solution for now. Maybe later something better will be found and it can be changed from that point forward. Thank you for your help.
