working on new template

  i’m interested in purchasing a premium template, but will need to rework my content. can i work on building the content on the new theme WHILE my old one is running, then just switch to the new one, so there is no interruption of the look?

  would like to switch from twenty ten to the magazine theme

  This isn’t a perfect solution, but you can create a second “test” blog on WordPress.com and purchase the premium theme for the test blog. You can then export your content from your main blog, import it to your test blog and set things up the way you want.

  Afterward, just contact our support team and ask them to transfer your premium theme from your test blog to your main blog (you can use the premium theme on one blog at a time unless you purchase it for both blogs). You can export your content and re-import it into your main blog (please note though, that theme options, custom widgets and custom menus cannot be transferred between blogs — only posts, pages, comments and images).

  So to be clear, you can’t play around with different themes without affecting your current theme even if you don’t publish it. Is that right?

  I would have to create a new test blog to try out my ideas otherwise the new theme will show up on my blog whether I publish it or not.

  That’s correct. And you’d have to buy the upgrade for the test blog AND the blog you ultimately want to put the changes on.
