Worried about Copyright.
-
My site is on private at the moment because I am doing a major overhaul. In the past I just used images I found on the net. But now I want to do it properly. The problem is that some of the images I have used and want to use in the new site are from sites who themselves have not cited the source of the image. An example of this can be found on touregypt.net.
In other words, many of the images I want to use I presume are not from the original source. Is there any point in asking them (i.e., touregypt) if I could use an image from their website when they are not even the owners of the image and have not cited the source themselves?
Some of the sources I will be using will be from Wikipedia and The British Museum, so I will have to send them an email and ask if I could have access to a few of their images to be used on my blog.
But I’ve got a lot of images I have just taken from websites where they themselves haven’t cited any source or anything.
What should I do?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Not really since the copyright resides with the owner / person that took the picture no matter how many thieves there are between the copyright owner and you
Most of Wikipedia images are licensed Creative Commons, in that they can be used but there are conditions, read the fine print (not all that fine actually) about the terms, the last time I got an image for a project from Wikipedia I had to cite the source on the printed material.
You can go ahead and keep using the images, but there are image search engines out there and your blog would be at risk to be taken down with a DMCA complaint –
There are no shortcuts I know of other than find pictures that are legal to use. Timethief has some copyright info in her site http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/popular-posts/
The picture copyright issue is why I only use pictures I have taken myself even if they are maybe not the best, not something you can do given your wide content.
Also some Govt. sources have pictures that you can use for no cost as long as you cite the source (Much of the U.S. Govt. sites are that way I think, but check the fine print)
And thanks much for being honest & good luck with your site

I wish we had a means of removing and image from the Media Library and not leaving a broken link behind in the posts(s) and/or page(s) it was embedded into. If we could delete the image from the Media Library and the code disappeared form the posts(s) and pages(s) it was embedded into then those who have hundreds of posts would be able to clean up their blogs without going through the nightmare of having to remove the image codes post by post and page by page.
P.S. I’m posting this into the Ideas Forum in a new thread.

Yes anyone can proceed legally despite the fact the the doctrine of fair use applies. When they get to court years and many dollars later the judge may find that the fair use doctrine does apply. Granted no matter how many notices one posts one can be sued and that’s our reality. We can even be victims of a SLAPP suit.

Had the same problem before. Here’s what I’m doing right now.
1. Use the Public Image Resources online – Wiki can populate a list of public images that you can use on your site or blog. Problem is, you’ll rarely find a good image that you’ll like. A lot of the free images are about nature, and a lot of the really good images are paid. So, good luck hunting.
2. Search in Flickr and filter only those images under Creative Common License. You can use these images but of course, you’ll need to credit the author.
3. Use your camera and take your own original image :)

Thanks so much for posting what we already know. lol :D I know of 71 sites that provide free images. But that’s NOT what’s being discussed here. What we are discussing is how to achieve automatic image deletion from posts and pages when deleted from Media Library. At present that cannot be done. Post here if you support the idea of having that ability https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/automatic-image-deletion-from-posts-and-pages-when-deleted-from-media-library?replies=1#post-1495384

If you delete the image from the media library it doesn’t appear in your post. If it does why don’t you create a duplicate of the post and delete the original?
-
Every time we use an image the software creates a copy of it. So I upload image1 and I use it in two posts and there will be 2 copies of it. If I delete the original image the copies are not deleted. I would have to delete every copy the software made of the image.

Maybe I misunderstood you. If you had the ability to delete images from the Media Library that you were not positive you had the copyright holder’s permission to use (images not from the original source), and have the images disappear from all the posts they were embedded into, without leaving any broken code behind in the posts, then the cleanup would be quick and easy to do.
-
I would just delete the post and start again. My problem is with using images without knowing the original source, and how I might circumvent having to search for the original source without infringing any copyright laws.
-
If all you want to locate is the source of an image to confirm the terms of use re: copyright then use reverse image search. There are browser add-ons for reverse image search.

There is no shortcut or backdoor that will provide immunity from enforcement of any copyright violation. You search or you don’t search. that’s your prerogative but there is no protection fro those who use copyright digital content without the copyright holder’s express prior written permission to use it.

Copyright is vested in the creator and remains vested solely in the creator for 100 years, unless the copyright holder expressly declares otherwise copyright – under terms of use.
