I want my followers to receive emails when I publish a new portfolio project (not just a post). I am using Sketch theme. Is there a way to enable this that I am missing?

If you portfolio projects are on Pages then be aware that Posts and Pages are different http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
There are no RSS Feeds for Pages and there is no means of subscribing to them. So what you can do publish posts with links to the new portfolio projects in them and create a portfolio projects category that can be subscribed to.
This is the format for a category feed on WordPress.com blogs:
http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/category/categoryname/feed/Every time you publish a post it will automatically appear on the dynamic Archives page and the dynamic Categories and sub-categories pages, assuming you have assigned categories and sub-categories to it.
Technically you can’t post to more than one page on any blog but do read on. Static Pages and dynamic Category Pages are not the same. The former cannot automatically update but the latter do.

By default the front page of the blog is the post that displays all posts in your blog. Though there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts (not pages) http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.
We organize posts by assigning categories to them. You can create a custom menu and add the dynamic categories pages into the custom menu.
