Would like theme suggestions
-
Hi. In the near future, I plan to move the contents of one of my websites, http://www.desperationmorale.com, to a WordPress blog. The biggest part of this site consists of the so-called “World of ASL,” a collection of game/product reviews that individually essentially look like this: http://www.desperationmorale.com/worldofasl/worldcrithit7.html#kharkov.
I plan to have a different blog entry for each product, creating categories to divide products by manufacturer, type, etc.
I am searching for a theme (pay themes are fine) that will work best with this sort of content. I know I need single column (except for widgets, etc.). I would like the front page to be able to have an image banner created by me at the top. Ideally, I’d like a second, smaller image banner to appear at the top of all other pages I create or generated by the blog, but I don’t know if that is possible.
I need to be able to customize the colors. It should be friendly for extensive text reading, because this will be very text-heavy (with various small images for each product).
I am currently using Misty Lake for another blog, http://unearthedohio.com/, but I do not like at all how images fade unless the mouse pointer hovers over them.
I would greatly welcome and appreciate any suggestions you might have, as there are so many themes available right now–your advice would save me a lot of time and trouble.
Thanks very much in advance. :) :) :)

Well, I have to say I thought at least one person would deign to suggest a theme or two. :(

I obviously know the difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com–in my original message I even provided a link to a WordPress.com blog that I had.
I did not reference nor am I interested in WordPress.org. I am talking about WordPress.com.
Again, I would very much welcome theme suggestions that might work with what I described in my original post.
Thanks to everybody very much in advance.

In that case then take a look at the themes showcase.
For example:
…I need single column (except for widgets, etc.). I would like the front page to be able to have an image banner created by me at the top. Ideally, I’d like a second, smaller image banner to appear at the top of all other pages
a search of themes which will do that is here:
http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/featured-image-header/I need to be able to customize the colors.
Note that there are quite a few filters you can use to filter for themes you might like.
Many themes allow you to choose custom background colors and / or images. You can also learn a bit of html formatting for text colors, sizes, styles, tables, backgrounds, and borders and more. start here:
http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/07/11/formatting-text-pt-5/
Or you can purchase a CSS upgrade for more site-wide customization:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
(or more general info about that:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/?s=css+upgrade )…your advice would save me a lot of time and trouble…
Choosing a theme is a personal decision so what one person likes, another will find fault; what you like is up to you.
Best advise I can offer is that you start a private test blog, and import your content to it, so you can try one theme and another, and another, until you find one you like. Having content you want to use will allow you to experiment with how your blog / site will look when it’s public.
While you are experimenting with your private test blog, choose a theme which appeals to you in general and continue publishing posts. When you discover “your perfect theme” then it won’t be difficult to apply the theme and modifications you made on the test blog to your live site.
And remember that your site will never ever be finished: you’ll always be adding more information, more style tweaks, better and better photos and content, and always polishing it to perfection (which will be just around the next corner or improvement to make to it).

This is an interesting discussion about how staff and several long-time bloggers on WordPress.com chose themes and continue to revise / change / improve their sites.

What you are basically saying is, “I won’t offer you any theme suggestions.”
I clearly am familiar with the themes showcase, and I am also familiar with its shortcomings.
My whole point in making my original post was to get help in SHORTCUTTING the laborious and irritating procedure of having to set up a test blog and test theme after theme after theme. I was hoping to take advantage of people who might have previously set up blogs that were similar to the one I intend to create by soliciting some of their recommendations. You know, “Judging by what you describe, I have to wonder if maybe the theme ‘Squirrel Nuts’ might be just what you are looking for.” I could start by testing those suggestions and perhaps one of them might be very suitable and save me a lot of time.
There are obviously many people on this forum who have far more experience with different themes than I have and theoretically could help me having to reinvent the entire wheel.
I thought my original post was extremely polite and not an unreasonable request. So I will allow myself to express some anger and irritation here. The first two responses were by a bot and a moderator telling me, in effect, to go away. The next response, by moderator 1tess after I re-explained myself, was extraordinarily patronizing. “Remember that your site will never ever be finished”? Having hand-coded my first website in 1995, I guess that’s something I figured out on my own.
I routinely help people in discussion forums on subjects where I have some expertise. I guess I was mistaken in hoping for some help here. I’ll just go away so that you can spend your time not helping some other person.

The themes that are coded to run on free hosted WordPress.COM blogs with the same names as the themes coded to run on WordPress.ORG software are not the same. Do you comprehend that? Themes for WordPress.ORG blogs are found here http://wordpress.org/themes/
As WordPress.com and WordPress.org have different log-ins and run different versions of themes with same names it’s logical for you to post where you can get the help you need. If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

I’m sorry you don’t understand my point:
Choosing a theme is a personal decision so what one person likes, another will find fault; what you like is up to you.
The link I gave you above provided you with 26 different themes which will provide you with the criteria you mentioned. That means there are 185 themes which do not match what you described.
I’ve experimented with all of the non-premium themes on that list, and they all have customizable headers, and will display featured images on post views.
As for choosing just one, I like Chateau, but that is my aesthetic point of view.

Opinions – your want opinions then here goes. When I look at this I recoil in horror – OMG! Here’s the eye bleach.
“World of ASL,” a collection of game/product reviews that individually essentially look like this: http://www.desperationmorale.com/worldofasl/worldcrithit7.html#kharkov.
That’s among the most butt ugly sites I have ever seen and I cannot imagine anyone wanting to recreate that appearance. Choose any one of the themes our Moderator p[pointed to and you will be able to create a decent looking site that doesn’t give rise to stomach heaving responses.
