Would like to make thumbnail grid images the same size

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello. Posted on the forums days ago and no replies.

I have a gallery on my home page and would like the thumbnails to be all the same size so that it looks nice and clean like the example on the support page. At the moment, all the images are different sizes so it looks kind of haphazard.

Or – I previously had it set at square tiles and I think it looks great this way, but they are so large. Is there a way to make them smaller so there could be 4-6 columns?

Last option – is there a theme that would be better for my purposes? Essentially I want a very basic, very clean and professional looking way to display a growing amount of artwork on the home page. Thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Deborah,

Currently, there isn’t a way to make the thumbnails all one size as they are created from the original dimensions of the image. So, in order for the images to all be one size, they would need to be the same size when uploaded. Does that make sense?

The square tiles would be the best option for what you’re describing, but again, it currently isn’t possible to change the amount of columns on a square tile gallery (only on the thumbnail grid). So, the square tile gallery would look like this:

One theme that came to mind regarding what you’re looking to accomplish is the Photographer theme found here:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/photography/

The theme has a specific page referred to as a Gallery page that will organize your images to be the same size as shown in the demo:

    http://photographydemo.wordpress.com/gallery/

    Explained here:

Would that work for what you’re looking to accomplish?

Thanks for the response. Apologies for having two threads – I did not realize when I contacted for support that it would create a second thread.

I had a look at the live demo of Photography – my front page looks essentially the same, except it appears that I would lose my header. The settings I am allowed to play with on the preview don’t allow me to adjust the number of columns. Is there a way to preview the gallery page you are referring to? I am just not enticed by the idea of paying for a theme without knowing if it will suit my purposes.

I have previewed a number of other themes (Hatch, Lens, Spun) and none of them look like the examples. They essentially look the same as my site stands but with different colours. Is it because my front page is a gallery, rather than individual images?

    Hi Deborah,

That’s not a feature that the theme supports – yet. The gallery page template is set to be three columns across as shown here:

I completely understand! How about this? I can give you some credits on your account so you can purchase the theme to give it a test drive. If you like it and we can set it up to your liking, I’ll send a payment request for the cost of the theme. If not, I’ll remove it. This way, there’s no upfront cost for you to try it out. How does that sound?

If you would like to do this for another theme (Hatch, Lens, Spun, etc), I’m happy to set it up for you and make sure it fits what you’re looking for.

    Hi –
I appreciate the response and the willingness to let me try for free. However if there aren’t any themes that allow for more than 3 columns in the gallery I think I’ll pass for now. My goal is to get as many thumbnails on the front page as possible and I don’t think WordPress is able to help me see my vision at this point. I’m exploring some other options to build my site elsewhere as I think that might be best for me. Should I decide to take you up on this offer I’ll let you know. Thanks!

    Hey Deborah,

Not a problem. I completely understand. Looking back, it does appear as though the majority of our photography themes feature three-column layouts. The main exception would be Spun.

Here are some other suggestions to consider:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/hatch/

If you would like to try out any of these themes or need help setting them up, please let me know!
