Would transferring a .org website to .com eliminate errors?

    Hi,

    This question IS about WordPress.COM

I have a self-hosted WordPress site that is has grown quite large.
Something is causing big spikes in memory usage which results in error messages and the site going down.

The hosts think there is an error somewhere, but do not know what it is.

To avoid the site disappearing regularly I am wondering:

    1. If I transferred the site to wordpress.com would that automatically eliminate any errors and allow the site to work properly? I need no special plugins, just a working site that is reliable.

    2. Is it possible to transfer the site and keep all the original links and visitors, etc? I don’t want to end up with a site that doesn’t crash but has lost all its traffic.

    3. How would this be possible with a large site? I think downloading it all as suggested here http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/ would not work as it such a large site.

Thanks very much for any insight.

Traffic should not be an issue – the memory spike should go away since you can’t bring any code here – you can only use one of the about 300 stock themes here – NO code changes at all – you can style with CSS upgrade if you want

    2) depends – your existing permalink structure needs to match the structure here or you will have address errors for a while

    Site-Name.com/Year/Month/Day/Post-Title

There will still be some issues with media (pictures) as the base blog name is in the media file name

    https://Blog-Name.files.wordpress.com/Year/Month/Media-File-Name.(jpg, pdf etc)

If you have a large site you need to break it up into smaller pieces and import a section at a time

lease review the terms of service & related links carefully – many things you can do on a .ORG site can’t be done here

    Hi,
Thanks for the thorough answers. I will have to read the links through.

Do you know the answers to these follow up Qs?

    When you write…
    2) depends – your existing permalink structure needs to match the structure here or you will have address errors for a while

How long is a while and is there any way (given the link structure doesn’t match exactly) to reduce a while to nothing? Maybe with redirecting from the old pages to the new ones via the original site’s htaccess?

Is there any way to transfer images successfully?

    Thanks again,
    Jonathan
