Wovember website export

    Hello,

We have had a blog at wovember.com for several years, using the wordpress.com hosting. However, we have now decided that we want to have a self-hosted website, and I am in the process of migrating the content across. I have purchased wovember.com and added it to my private hosting with dreamhost, and all the content we have created over many years is held at wovember.wordpress.com.

I am trying to import all the articles from wovember.wordpress.com across to our new self-hosted site, however the export files that I am creating using your tools are extremely incomplete. Many posts are missing, whole years are missing… basically I am getting totally incomplete versions of the site through your export options.

Do you have some kind of way of generating a complete .xml file of all the data at wovember.wordpress.com and emailing me a download link at (email visible only to moderators and staff)? I have installed the importer on the self-hosted blog and can confidently deal with the information once I have a complete xml file to work with, but, unfortunately, the xml files I am getting using your wordpress.com tools are just unusable.

    I’d really appreciate your help,
    Cheers,
    Felicity Ford

…this thread gave me hope that someone working at the back end of WordPress.com might be able to help me out here!!!

  • Hey Felicity!

I just emailed in regards to your XML file.

Let me know if you didn’t receive it. Thanks!

Thank you very much for the export file you generated! Alas, it’s the exact same size as the one I was able to export – i.e. totally incomplete and missing loads of files. I’m not sure what the problem is, whether there might be some error at my end where I’m importing the files, as I’m missing so many posts every time I use the import tool :(

If you compare the two sites, you can see what I mean:

    http://www.wovember.com/

(this is the one I have created by importing your export file)

    https://wovember.wordpress.com/

    (this is the original website)

so many posts are missing, I do not understand why the export files are so incomplete?

  • Hey Felicity,

I was curious about how many published posts are showing on your self-hosted blog after the export? I see 428 for your WordPress.com blog – wanted to see how big of a discrepancy there is.

I currently see little to no content on the self-hosted blog, but there is some. It appears that the comments were exported successfully. How about any pages that you have? I want to see if there is content that may be there – just not set up to be viewed because you are now on a different platform.

    Let me know, thanks!

Thanks, there were 11 posts showing after the export all export; I actually reinstalled wordpress in case there was some problem at that end.

Since reinstalling wordpress, I tried exporting just the pages to see if going in smaller chunks would help… doing it this way, I now have successfully imported all the pages. I wonder if I should import posts year by year rather than attempting to do them all at once? Very time consuming way of doing things, but worth it if it works.

  • I would try that if you saw a difference. Maybe try in three separate chunks? How big was the XML file by the way?
