WP Admin area is off – Do I just need to update?

    Hiya WordPress(ers),

My new WordPress site displays a (in some cases) completely different admin area than the ones I’m working on for a client. The looks aren’t the problem here, the missing options are. For example, I can’t find Updates (under Dashboard) en more importantly: I can’t add any themes (under Appearance). Argh.

Also, the main (black) menu at the top shows other (and even faulty) options: next to the WordPress logo, there’s My site, something called Reader (Lezer in Dutch) and an ‘invisible’ link underlined with dots, which is supposed to send me through to the site. While in the WordPress sites I’m used to working with, the following is displayed next to the logo: Sitename plus the symbols for updates, comments and blog posts. And ‘Howdy, [name]’ at the far right.

Do I (A) just need an update to fix it? Or is (B) something else wrong here? In case of A: I suppose I need to do this manually, right? The website is still completely empty, so no worries there. But where do I start? :)

    Thanks a bunch!

    Rosanne

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Oh man, is it a .com vs. .org kind of problem? If it is, sorry for not understanding the difference :’)

It sounds like it is. WordPress.org are self-hosted sites and therefore can be updated. The dashboard is similar but has a lot more options than our limited WordPress.com site. Double check with your client and be sure it is a self-hosted site.

    Thanks, Kristina! I’ll will :)

If you find that fixed your problem, don’t forget to come back and mark this post as resolved so that others know it has been fixed. :)

Fixed it! It was a matter of .com vs. .org – everything’s working perfectly fine on an .org-website now :) Thanks again.
