WP Admin page works, most others are blank

  • Unknown's avatar

If I go into my Crotchety Man blog via My Sites -> WP Admin I can create, edit and publish new posts. However, most of the other links on the My Sites navigation panel take me to a page with the blue strip at the top and a blank page body with the fancy ‘W’ WordPress logo. In particular, the ‘new’ editor doesn’t load.

This sounds like the question posted in the Forums on 5th February 2018 (#3072045) which was never resolved.

I have the same problem with my Stoney Fish Tales blog, too. I’ve told Safari to empty the caches but that has made no difference. Any suggestions?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi stoneyfish,

I’ve checked stoneyfish.wordpress.com and the dashboard is loading without any issues from my side. Does the same problem occur in other browsers or just Safari?

Also, do you have any extensions or ad blockers installed in this browser?

Hi, Gemma. Thanks for getting back to me.

The Chrome browser doesn’t have this problem.

Safari is set to block pop-up windows, there are no content blockers, WordPress.com is configured as “stop media with sound” and there is one extension: a Pin It Button. I don’t think these settings have changed recently and I can’t think of anything that has changed since I noticed the problem a few days ago.

Telling Safari to behave like FireFox doesn’t fix the problem. Nor does telling Safari to behave like Chrome.

    Does this help at all?

  • Browser extensions can run interference. It’s best to retry with out any of them enabled (temporarily) to see how things perform.

Disabling the one extension (a Pin It Button) hasn’t made any difference. Is it enough to clear the checkbox in the Preferences panel and reload one of the offending pages? Or are further steps necessary to kill the extensions?

  • Can you please make sure that Safari doesn’t load WordPress.com in the Reader Mode? Here’s how to check it:

    https://www.macworld.com/article/3206708/websites/how-to-use-reader-mode-in-safari-11.html

After checking I find that ‘Use reader mode when available’ is not ticked but ‘Enable content blockers’ is. Disabling the content blockers doesn’t fix the problem.

The behaviour seems to have changed slightly, though, today (irrespective of the content blocker checkbox). Now I see a light blue sidebar to the blank page body, although there are still no images, buttons or text anywhere on the page.

    Still baffled!

One thing I noticed has changed. The editor used to have a Save button (with blue text) that would automatically change to Saving and then Saved (in grey) when the auto-save function kicked in. Now it goes to Saving (grey) and then back to Save (blue); there’s no Saved (grey) state that I can see. As a result we can no longer tell whether there are outstanding changes.

It’s not important but I did find it slightly disappointing. And I don’t know if this has anything to do with the main problem I’m seeing.

@stoneyfish, I’ve pinged our developers on this. Hopefully they will get back quickly. I’ve not been able to reproduce this, but did encounter another user that reported this.

Do you have another browser installed that you could try?

Also try logging out and then clear all cookies and then log back in and see if the issue is still there. I know the developers will ask about these given I haven’t been able to reproduce this on my MacBook Pro.

Ah, cookies! That was the problem. Having cleared all cookies everything is working again.

    Thanks to everyone who replied.
