wp-admin/media-upload.php no longer works
-
Until a day or so ago, I used to use the following url which allowed people on my site to upload photos to a gallery,
https://brickiesgazette.wordpress.com/wp-admin/media-upload.php?post_id=NNNNNN&type=image (where NNNNN is the id of the post containing the gallery)
This method pre-dates the “new” gallery
When i now use this method and select a photo and then “Insert into post”, my browser window disappears into cyberspace.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I should add that i know there are other ways of achieving the same result. I am aware of all of them. Its just that in each post I have an “Upload Photo” button that minimises the number of clicks authors have to make. It also minimises errors.

Today, I see that several new images have been added to the site’s Media Library.
Are you still experiencing an issue?
If so, have you referred to the following support pages?
If you are still having a problem, let me know, and we can take the next troubleshooting step, once I get more feedback.

I didn’t say that I couldn’t upload photos to the media library, I said that using
https://brickiesgazette.wordpress.com/wp-admin/media-upload.php?post_id=NNNNNN&type=image
no longer works. I can assure you that I do know how to upload images and some of the problems. However, this one is clearly a WP issue (IMO)

If you or an authorized user of your site needs to update a gallery, you can use the following method:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/#editing-a-gallery-or-slideshow
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/gallery-question?replies=6#post-296417
If this is not satisfactory and you’d like to move to a self-hosted, WordPress.org site, let me know and I will forward the appropriate information.

I’m sorry – but this is not really a satisfactory answer. You don’t seem to be reading what I am saying.
I do know the various methods of uploading a photo to the gallery, and I am not interested in moving my site (which would not be possible anyway).
I am asking the simple question why doesn’t the method I gave you work any more? If WP have removed that feature then all you have to do is tell me.

FYI I’ve found a forum thread where I described the method…..

Hi Knasher,
I’ve tried following your steps and even though after hitting “Insert into post” the screen goes blank, it appears to still upload the image, attach it to the post_id, but then fails to actually insert the media into gallery within that post.
It was likely not intentional that this functionality was removed, but I could very well be wrong.
I reported this to our developers to find out more of whether this functionality can be returned or not. It seems likely that a change occurred in how Galleries are handled, since the uploader portion of this is working.

Thank you for following this up. What you are seeing is exactly what I am seeing too. It would be great if the functionality can be restored since I have around 150 gallery’s for which I have provided a dedicated upload button. To change all of them would be a pain.

I should add that galleries have 2 methods which both use the gallery short ode. A gallery can use one method or the other but not both.
Old method
Use the gallery short code. All photos attached to the posted are included in the gallery by default. Such photos can be explicitly excluded. The upload method which I described uses this method.New method (2011 ?)
Use the same gallery shortcode but explicitly specify the photos to be included. If one edits a post which uses the old method then it automatically converts to the new method. Editing the shortcode can be employed to convert back to the old method

Hi again!
So as I continued testing this, the same behavior occurred on a self-hosted site running WordPress 4.1. If that functionality was previously working and no longer is, the change would’ve been a result of something in the core software, not just WordPress.com.
Basically the issue is just that the upload available at /wp-admin/media-upload.php is the compat mode of media modal from before WordPress 3.5. It’s really only still available in the core software because several older plugins use this modal for uploading.
Using that upload area for the sake of allowing Author-level users to add content to another author’s post, not just editors or above, wasn’t really the intent. So our developers don’t really see your methodology as something to bring back.
The simplest (fewest clicks) way to add more content to an already existing gallery is using these steps:
- Edit the gallery (it opens in the newest media modal).
- Drag-and-drop the new image(s) into the modal.
- Click “Update Gallery” after the images are uploaded.
But this would require your users to be either the author of that post, or an editor-role (or above.)

Thanks for investigating.
Have to say though that removing functionality can cause your users stress ( just look at the pain removing the convenient link to Classic Editor). Maintaining upward compatibility can be difficult but it is usually possible.
Your fewest clicks method of course does not include the click to edit the post and the click to update the post,so by my reckoning that’s 5 clicks. My method took just 2 clicks.
5 clicks or 2? Which is best?
