WP changes my HTML so my embedded form is unusable

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi
Every time I copy the HTML for my signup form from Mailchimp into WordPress, the HTML changes when I click the save button and it makes my pretty form into a jumbled mess. How can I stop it doing that, please? Before I go completely mad. Have lost the best (or worst) part of a day trying to resolve this. Can anyone help?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

What is the code that you are trying to embed? Does it contain javascript?

We do not allow certain tags on WordPress.com, for security reasons, including JavaScript, Flash, iframe, form, and input tags.

These restrictions are in place to prevent any disruptions in service due to potentially malicious code.

You can read more about this here:

    Code

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

I’m trying to copy the code required to insert my MailChimp embedded signup form onto my WordPress website. I’m not exactly computer-savvy (a user rather than a techie person, so I’m akin to a driver who can drive the car but has no clue how the engine works).
It does mention javascript in the code I’m trying to copy in, but since it’s generated by Mailchimp, I’ve no idea how to make it do anything other than what it’s doing automatically. I could copy the code into a message for you to take a look, if that’s likely to help in any way…?
    Thanks.

If you want to embed a Mailchimp form, see instructions at https://en.support.wordpress.com/mailchimp/

Thanks for the link, but I’ve tried the pop-up option and the version where your form simply appears on the page and neither works. Every time I click on ‘save’, the code changes and I get all kinds of jibberish appear if I publish it.

  • What is the URL of the site you tried to save the code on?

Mind you can only place the MailChimp code in the Mailchimp subscriber popup widget; you can’t place that code somewhere on a page. Did you follow the instructions step-by-step as described on https://en.support.wordpress.com/mailchimp/#the-subscriber-pop-up-form

  • but I’ve tried the pop-up option

I don’t see the Mailchimp widget added to your site. Can you please add it again, and paste in the code you got from Mailchimp, then let us know here so we can take a look?

Also make sure you haven’t perhaps connected your site to your Mailchimp account. See the info box in this section of the support page: https://en.support.wordpress.com/mailchimp/#the-subscriber-pop-up-form

and the version where your form simply appears on the page

Embedding a Mailchimp form directly like that can only be done using the Mailchimp block in the block editor, but it looks like you have your site set to the classic editor. In the classic editor there’s no way to embed a form directly, and the code will just be stripped out automatically by the editor.

If you want to try the Mailchimp block, you can see here:

    Insert a Mailchimp Signup Form

Note that the Mailchimp block, unlike the pop-up form, requires you to connect your site to your Mailchimp account.

OK… Getting bogged down rather here. Please be patient, I’m not techie.

I want to use an embedded form, not a pop-up one. I’ve no idea how to change from classic to block editor in WordPress (I googled it and it said there’d be an update button in WPAdmin, but I don’t see that on mine).

I can’t add plugins because I’m not on the business version of WordPress, just the free one.

So is what I’m trying to do impossible? Because I’m completely lost at this point.

  • Howdy :)

No worries. Let’s take it piece by piece.

I want to use an embedded form, not a pop-up one.

As mentioned, on a free WordPress.com site, the MailChimp widget with a pop up form is the only option.

I’ve no idea how to change from classic to block editor in WordPress (I googled it and it said there’d be an update button in WPAdmin, but I don’t see that on mine)

When you have a post or a page opened up in the editing screen it will look like this:

    https://wordpress.com/post/sianturnerauthor.wordpress.com/244
(example draft post from your site)

Then, look to the right hand side of the screen for the More Options menu item. Click on it, and you’ll see an option to switch to the block-style editor.

If you don’t want to use the pop up you can can add an option for folks to follow your blog through their email account. This is good for people who aren’t already following you through their WordPress.com accounts.

I have now added the mailchimp subscriber popup widget to my website https://sianturnerauthor.wordpress.com/ (in Footer 3). Then I copied in the code and saved it. But it doesn’t seem to be working: if I visit my website, I get no popup (it’s set to appear after 20 seconds, but doesn’t).
What am I doing wrong, please?

  • Your pop-up shows fine for me.

When someone dismisses the Mailchimp pop-up, we set a cookie in their browser to not show them the form again, and that’s likely why it’s not appearing for you.

Load your site in an incognito window in Chrome, and the pop-up should appear for you.

OK. Thank you for your help. :)
